I'm still having problems with connection to Sonos even though I have the 15.3 firmware and newest Roon updates

Roon Core Machine

Windows 11, Intel i7-12700K 3.6 GHz, , 32 GB RAM

Networking Gear & Setup Details

Ethernet connection to all components in Roon to Sonos chain with exception of Android devices for the non-core Roon aps

Connected Audio Devices

Main device is Bryston BDP2 (not having the issue)
3 Sonos w/amp (problem occurs on these)
1 Sonos w/o amp connected to home theater system (problem occurs with this as well)
Also played through speakers connected directly to PC used as core (no issue with this)

Number of Tracks in Library

about 7250 tracks

Description of Issue

When attempting to play over Sonos, receive message that “Roon lost control of audio device”. Then the music starts playing but, after about 30 seconds, starts to skip and/or momentarily pause.

Thanks for your help. I did reboot the Sonos device. You didn’t mean that I should reset to factory settings, did you?

I didn’t disable WiFi on all units but did on the one that I’ve been using to see if anything helps.

I also reset the router and Cisco switch.

To check Ethernet speed I ran an internet speed check assuming that the Ethernet speed would be no slower than the internet speed over a PC connected to the switch. Download an upload were both about 900 Mbps.

Please advise

Thanks again

Hey @Charles_Hale,

Thanks for taking the time to write in, and my apologies for the delay in following up with your thread!

After bringing your issue to our developers, we have a few follow up questions for you:

  1. Do your Sonos function properly outside of Roon?
  2. If possible, can you please bypass your network gear and connect your core directly to your router?
  3. Please double check your firewall settings on your Windows 11 core. I would verify that both Roon.exe and RAATServer.exe have been added as exceptions to your Windows firewall.

Lastly, if none of the above help, please reproduce the issue and share the date, time, as well as the name of the track you’re playing when the issue occurs.

I’ll be on standby for your reply. :+1:

I have this issue. Again. Same issue as what was happening in April. Can’t control Sonos devices via Roon via Sonos streaming. Sonos works fine. Roon to Sonos works fine via Airplay.

Hi Ben,

Thank you for your reply. The latest Roon update has helped the issue and I have been working with the system in an attempt to find the extent of the problem (how many files show problems).

To your questions:

  1. Using the Sonos S2 Android App, the system does not show the same issue for any FLAC file less than 98/24.

  2. After connecting the core directly to the router (bypassing the switch) the same problems occurred.

  3. Both Roon.exe and RAATServer are listed as firewall exceptions.

Using Roon to access the Sonos system, FLAC files of 192/24 always have the “lost control” issue. Fortunately, I only have a few files of that nature and would typically play those through my main system via the Bryston hardware.

Roon with files at 98/24 or less now generally do work. But there are exceptions. In particular, one of my wife’s “easy listening” albums always fails. This album was ripped from CD and has the 44.1/16 FLAC format. I have asked her to resume listening to her albums via Roon (skipping the Burt Bacharach album with the issues) and note any tracks with issues.

Again, thanks for your help. If you have any other suggestions, I’ll be glad to give them a shot. For now, I’ll keep trying to determine the actual extent of the problem with the files I have.

Hey @Charles_Hale,

Thanks for the update! I’m glad to hear things have smoothened out for the most part. If you are able to take note of the specific date and time the next time you run into an issue, feel free to share that here and we can take a more precise look into your core diagnostics. :+1:
