Describe the issue
I have a Mac-based roon system with one server and four clients. All of these devices are on the same Eero network and can communicate with each other. Three of the clients communicate fine with the roon server. However, the fourth, an iMac, cannot connect. It is located next to another computer that connects with no problems. I can play music from the neighboring computer while the iMac cannot find the server. The iMac connected normally until several months ago, when it stopped. Do you have any ideas? Thanks, Duncan
Describe your network setup
The internet is connected through ethernet to an Eero Pro 6E router. The 6E connects via WiFi to two other Eero Pro 6 mesh points located in other parts of the house. One of these Pro6 routers is connected through Ethernet to an LHY Audio SW-6 ethernet switch. The roon server (a Mac mini) is connected by ethernet cable to the SW-6. All four (3 connecting and one not) roon clients connect via WiFi.
Thanks for writing in and welcome to the community!
As a first step, it would be good to review a set of logs from the issue mac - could you please use the directions found here and send over a set of Roon logs from the issue iMac to our File Uploader?
As a temporary next step as well, can you connect both your primary server, as well as the issue iMac directly to your primary router - not one of the mesh extenders, and let me know if you have the same issues connecting?
It may be worth reviewing the iMac firewall settings as well, sometimes temporarily disabling he mac firewall can be helpful to test if the firewall is causing any blockages.
Hope you had a great holiday season. We wanted to check in with you here, are you still seeing the same behavior at the present time? A thought comes to mind have you by any chance used Time Machine or Migration Assistant for the PC with the issue? Also, you mentioned having reinstalled Roon on the iMac, but can you confirm you also set the previous Roon install aside on the iMac? To clarify the instructions, please see below:
I had indeed reinstalled the roon application, but I did not change the roon Database folder. I will try that–it may take a few days–and let you know what happens.
I answer to your other questions: the behavior is still the same and I have not used either Time Machine or Migration assistant with the iMac in question.
Duncan
Unfortunately, replacing the roon library folder, made no change either. While in the Libray folder, I noticed that there were RoonServer and RoonGoer folders too. Should I be worried about these?
Thanks for the update! Could you download and install a fresh version of Roon on the issue iMac? This should prompt Roon to update to the latest version, which may help.
From your account, it looks like at one point or another, you’ve set up multiple Roon Servers across most of your Macs - this is nothing to worry about. Just make sure there is no Roon Server running on any of the devices other than your dedicated server machine. You can ensure this by reviewing your Mac taskbar - you’ll see a Roon jellyfish if Roon Server is running. You can click it and ‘Quit’ if this is the case (other than your dedicated Mac running Roon Server.)
Are you able to try this again but bypass the switch?
And if you temporarily disable the firewall on the mac running Roon Server, does the same issue occur?
If you haven’t yet, I would also stop Roon Server from running, and power down the machine, as well as reboot your router.
I have reinstalled roon several times with no change, but I will try again this afternoon.
The server and client are located in separate rooms, so this will take a bit, but I can try it. (See below.)
I have turned off the firewalls in both the server and client iMac simultaneously with no change. (See below.)
My system has two clients sitting next to each other, the subject iMac and a MacBook. Both clients attach to the server in the same way–computer>>WiFi>>eero mesh network>>ethernet>>server. The MacBook client works perfectly and the iMac client does not.
I deleted Roon library and reinstalled Roon–no change.
I ran an ethernet cable directly from the iMac to the server–no change.
Another observation–all of my other clients ask me to locate a server if it can’t find the correct one. The iMac only asks to find a Roon OS. Is this relevant?
Hi @dnmaca,
Our records show Nancy’s iMac has an older style of Roon active. Can you tell us what steps you followed when your migrated to the new server?
Ok, now I’m confused. I think that Nancy’s iMac is running the same version of roon as my working client and the server (version 2.0, build 1496). If the logs show differently, is there a preferences file that I should clear in order for the iMac to recognize the new version?
Indeed, Nancy’s iMac is an older Intel-based iMac from 2019. It is still supported by Apple–could its age be causing a problem with roon?
The age of the Mac should not be an issue. If it was able to install Roon 2.0, then it should work.
Just to explicitly confirm here, you deleted the ~/Library/Roon folder (on the iMac) and then reinstalled the latest Roon package from our downloads page?
All of the preferences and associated files are stored on the ~Library/Roon and ~Library/RoonServer directory on the iMac, so if you only performed the process on the main Mac Mini, you’ll need to perform the process on the iMac to clear things up. You can also perhaps try a MacOS Application Cleaner, in case there are some other remnants, though all of the Roon install should be in those directories.
