Inability to Access Advanced Settings for USB DAC on Nucleus One (ref#OCBRQ7)

Hi! What’s not quite right with Roon?

· None of the above quite fits

None of the above quite fits

· None of these quite match

Tell us what's going on

· I can't access the advanced setting on device settings during setup for a USB attached dac to my Nucleus One

Tell us about your home network

· I have no trouble getting music to play, as long as I don't go past the Sample rate / bit depth capacities of my dac

My dac is really obscure, it was made by Chevron Audio in the UK. The USB input identifies as an ASUS Xonar Essence One.

I can’t use the Advanced Settings menu in device set up. That’s to say, I can’t set maximum sample rate to 96khz and bit depth to 24.

I can work around this by using a custom setting in MUSE, where I set the maximum sample rate for each possible input rate.

Hey @Stopeter44,

Thanks for writing in and sharing your report!

Just to triple confirm: Open Settings > Audio, click the gear icon next to the DAC, and select Device Setup.

Scroll all the way to the bottom. The “Advanced” section is often collapsed and requires you to click the word “Advanced” with a small downward chevron next to it.

This is the process you have followed to attempt to access the advanced settings?

If so, since the Chevron DAC is identifying as an ASUS Xonar Essence One, it is likely using a C-Media USB receiver chip. These can sometimes fail to pass their full descriptor list to the Linux kernel in the Nucleus if they aren’t synced perfectly.

As a next step, turn off the DAC and unplug the USB cable from the Nucleus:

  • Reboot your Nucleus One via the Roon app or the web administration page.
  • Once the Nucleus is fully booted and back online, power on the DAC.
  • Plug the USB cable back in (try a different USB port on the Nucleus if available).
  • Go back to Settings > Audio and see if the Advanced menu is now accessible.
It’s also worth noting that if the Linux kernel inside the Nucleus sees the "ASUS" receiver and assumes it is a fixed-integer device with no configurable hardware parameters, Roon might dynamically hide the Advanced menu because it thinks there are no variables to change. If that is the case, your MUSE workaround is actually the officially recommended path by Roon for handling misidentified USB endpoints.

Hi Benjamin,

Thank you for the full response. I’ll try the reboot options you suggest. If that fails, at least I have MUSE, and it is easy to save those settings with a preset.

No luck with the procedure you outlined. So a MUSE preset it is.

Thanks anyway.

@Stopeter44 ,

Here are supported formats of your DAC we can see from diagnostics report:

According to log it should support 96 Khz/ 24 bit.

Can you please share us a screenshot from device setup ?

Thanks.

Yes, it does support 96/24.

I just don’t have any options to limit input into the dac, i.e., there’s no advanced menu available to me.

what screen shot do you want to see ?

Hey @Stopeter44,

We were interested in seeing a screenshot of where your Advanced device settings are:

You may need to rely on MUSE with this DAC if you’re not able to access the advanced settings. Are you able to play audio at 96/24 outside of Roon?

Thank you!

Roon doesn’t allow me to see the advanced setting show/hide hardly does anything, it just changes the heading and the direction of the up/doxn triangle.

Don’t worry about it, it’s a legacy dac, hand made, and in very limited quantities, and is long out of production. It plays 96/24 on all inputs.

I’m using another dac now, a nd another streamer, which has a slight functional issue with roon, and I’ll be opening a ticket shortly. You can close this one.

Hi @Stopeter44,

Have you tried scrolling down after clicking the Advanced setting? We can certainly close out the case if you wish, but just wanted to verify this aspect first. Thanks!

Yes I tried scrolling down. There was no advanced menu for the sound card/dac.
