I think you are referring to the ID3 tag for Genre? The thing is that, currently, Roon only uses Genres at the Album level, not at the Track level; so there is no way to insert a genre column for tracks in the Track Browser.

Er, surely “genre” is also not inherently an album-level property? In fact the ID3v2 TCON ‘genre’ tag is explicitly associated with a track. So it’s perfectly possible to have an album with a mixture of genres. Every file tag is explicitly associated with a track, including obviously non-track-level things like “Album Artist”–this is a technical compromise inherent to file-based tagging, and not–by itself–a good argument for making all data track-based. It would be nice to see genres for individual tracks instead of albums. I play by genre mostly, and some albums have songs of different genres/styles, so it’s not all that great when a completely unrelated song is played lol!
