As I have not configured my NUC in the required way to get updates to the Early Access version of Roon OS, (I’m stuck on a 2023 version) I want to return to Production for Roon OS. I also want to remain on Early Access for Roon Server, which was my status until a couple of months ago.
However, following the instructions in this link I have only succeeded in updating Roon Server to Production, not Roon OS to Production.
The reason is the file you need to download/create is called roonos-production.txt not roon-production.bin as the instructions say. I got this from something @dannysays here.
Did I get all this from to an archived link with instructions that have been superceded or do the instructions need updating?
Did you follow the instructions for moving RoonOs back to production (from early access) that were published as part of the Roon OS build 260 early access software release announcement?
Thanks @Wade_Oram you’re right; if (IF) I had only read the Roon Early Access Program page in the right way. D’oh!
I was not following the instructions in the Build 260 announcement. I started with Google and searched for “return Roon OS to production”. This gave me the Roon Early Access Program page, via this page.
There is ambiguity in that when hunting for instructions you think you’ve found it, but were wrong. E.g. “Moving RoonOS (Nucleus / ROCK) servers back to production” has all the right words for what I was looking for. Especially considering to me that in a traditional sense my NUC running ROCK is a server, just a hardware server not a software server like Roon Server is, so everything seemed correct to me, until it wasn’t.
I guess my question about updating the documentation still stands. I think the answer is the instructions do need updating. I ask that the section on the Roon Early Access Program page is updated to highlight that this is only for Roon Server and add a link to the Roon OS update page(s) if you’re looking to migrate Roon OS, NOT Roon Server.
Reading this post I decided to look at my Roon OS and found it in “earlyaccess” at build 257.
I downloaded the “roon-production.bin” file and dropped it into my ROCK’s /Data/Reinstall directory; did a Reinstall of the Operating System but my OS remains at “earlyaccess” build 257. Not sure of what to do OR just leave it as such. Any help appreciated
Unless you need the new features (e.g. if you are running on a NUC12 or later and want to use HDMI audio), you are unlikely to see any difference between this older early access build and the current production build of RoonOS.
As you have seen, the build of the OS has not affected your ability to run the latest version of Roon Server.
Having said that, as I posted above, the instructions for returning to the production build of RoonOS (261) can be found in the RoonOs early access release announcement at:
