Intermittent Appearance of Audio Devices on Roon with KEF LSX and Wiim Pro Plus (ref#MDWS18)

What best describes your playback issue?

· My DAC, streamer, or speaker doesn't appear as a Zone in Roon

What type of Zone is affected by this problem?

· *Network Zones* are affected.

Is the affected network Zone connected with Ethernet or WiFi?

· Ethernet

Which network audio protocol is the Zone using with Roon?

· RoonReady

Does the device show up at all in Roon Settings -> Audio?

· No, it does not show up there

Does the device play audio from another source when using the same connection?

· The device has no problems with another audio source

Have you checked that Roon is whitelisted in any firewalls?

· I've checked the firewall and the issue remains

Since you are using a network connection to the device, please ensure that your RoonServer is on the same subnet as the device

· My devices are on a single subnet but is not visible to Roon

Do you have a complex network setup?

· I have a *mesh network* with devices connected to multiples points

Your local network might need some re-arranging to support Roon.

· None of the suggestions have helped me. I'd like to submit a support request.

Do you have an approximate timestamp of when the issue last occurred?

· 3 Feb late afternoon, tried playing 'Driving Home' by Yo La Tengo many times

What are the make and model of the affected audio device(s) and the connection type?

· Wiim Pro Plus (ethernet) KEF LSX (ethernet)

Describe the issue

Audio devices appear and disappear on Roon. When playing music, it stops as Roon can't see the audio device and 'select an audio zone appears'. In one room I have a set of KEF LSX active speakers which, until about a year ago, appeared as a Roon Tested/Ready device but since then has disappeared as such so I now use Airplay 2 to connect Roon to them.

I mention this because it seems connected to the main problem I have now: my other equipment randomly appears/disappears as a Roon audio device. I have a Wiim Pro Plus connected to a Mutec MC-3 USB connected to a Devialet D-Premier. Yesterday, the Wiim was unusable as an audio device via Roon, as I could barely listen to one track before it disappeared as an audio device on Roon. This has been happening for a couple of months but yesterday was the worst it has been but bizarrely after I rebooted the Roon server and the Wiim, the KEF LSX re-appeared as a Roon Tested/Ready device.

Today, the Wiim has been fine and the KEF LSX have disappeared but the system is too unreliable now. Please help - see below for equipment.

What are you using for the Roon server, (Nucleus, NUC/Rock, NAS, Mac/Windows desktop/laptop)? If that is specified in the description I missed it.

What you’re describing sounds Network related with connections being dropped.

Where is the Roon server connected in this mesh system. I see Ethernet listed but is there any wireless between the Roon server and the internet? Is the server connected by Ethernet to an extender with a wireless backhaul to the internet.

Hi Mike

Thanks for your reply. I’m using a SonicTransporter i5 which is connected by ethernet to a switch (tp-link 8 port Gigabit Easy Smart Switch with 4-Port PoE+) which is connected by ethernet to the router. Therefore it’s all ethernet but the router connects to the Wiim Pro Plus via 2 switches, the aforementioned tp-link and later the Tenda switch.

The KEF LSX speakers, in a different room, are connected via ethernet also by 2 switches, the aforementioned 8 port tp-link and another tp-link 5 port gigabit switch.

Could it be the switches? I changed the 5 port switch to the KEF LSX but the problem precedes this. The switches to the Wiim have been the same for a while and this is a recent problem so not sure this makes sense. Are there any recommended switches that work with Roon?

Many thanks

So the Roon server is connected to a Smart (managed) switch. I’ve heard Roon doesn’t do well with those but I could be mistaken.

Can you connect the server directly to the router, at least temporarily, to see if that helps?

OK I have connected the Roon Server directly to the router, will test this out over a day or two to see if this works.

Hi @Richard_Britton ,

Yes, eliminating managed switched from the equation is a good test to try, do let us know how this goes. If you are otherwise able to pinpoint when the speakers go missing (or when you restart the Server/speakers and they come back), let us know this timestamp. We can review logs around then and perhaps we will find some more clues, thanks!

Thank you, this worked, both devices appear and play without interruption. Many thanks
