Intermittent Disconnection of iFi ZEN Stream with Roon (ref#K3XJJY)

Hi! What’s not quite right with Roon?

· None of the above quite fits

Tell us what's going on

· Roon from time to time (once in an hour or two) without any visible reason loses connection with the playback device (iFi ZEN Stream connected via router by wire) and stops playing. For a few moments Roon shows no playback endpoint and then connects to the streamer again. In order to resume playback I have to press the Play button.

The problem appeared after installing the latest update which resolved another problem when playback appeared to start but stalled immediately until the playback device was rebooted. All the devices including ROON server on NAS, the router, the streamer and DAC were rebooted to no avail.

Here is the part of the log file corresponding to the moment the problem shows up:

Tell us about your home network

· My ROON server runs on Synology NAS, it is connected by wire with Keenetic router which sends the signal to iFi ZEN Stream with further output to Cambridge Audio dacmagic 200m. This exact setup previously worked perfectly, no changes have been made to connections or settings.

Hey, @DennisGoodman

Thank you for the detailed log excerpt and network topology. That makes it much easier to pinpoint where the connection is breaking down.

The logs point to a RAAT handshake failure. The Connection refused error on port 33510, followed by the 10000ms timeout, indicates that Roon Server is losing the heartbeat signal from the iFi ZEN Stream. Since this started after a firmware update, it suggests a regression in how the endpoint is handling the audio stream buffer or network keep-alive packets.

Please ensure that both your Synology NAS and the iFi ZEN Stream are assigned static IPs in your Keenetic router settings. The logs show attempts to connect to multiple IPs, .33 and .25, and if the streamer’s IP changes, Roon Server can lose the route and return the connection refused error.

Please verify that the rotary switch on the back of the iFi ZEN Stream is set to Position 2, Roon Exclusive Mode(Instead of All in one) . In Settings > Audio, open Device Setup for the iFi ZEN Stream, make sure Exclusive Mode is turned on, and set Volume Control to Fixed. On your Synology NAS, please ensure that IPv6 is disabled and check whether any Flow Control or MTU settings were changed by a recent DSM update.

Please let us know what you see after applying adjustments offered.

Thanks.

Hi, alex_h! Thanks for the advice. The problem is gone. It looks to have been caused by the double IP of the streamer, one for the wired connection and another one for Wi-Fi. After disabling Wi-Fi in the streamer the connection became stable. Thank you

You might also want to look at updating the firmware in the near future.

It’s currently available by support request only and a bit of a fiddle, so not sure if It will ever be pushed out as a standard firmware, but it’s a big improvement to the older firmwares and brings it up to date with the newest device features of the Zen Stream 3

Michael, thank you for the hint. I requested and received the latest update from the support in the end of 2025 and it was a great improvement, especially as it cured a problem of ZEN Stream briefly stuttering every 15 minutes or so.

Great to hear that.

Definitely a new lease of life for that device
