Intermittent issues with Danish Radio streaming quality (30 min Delay HLS Stream) (ref#SOI0FP) [Ticket In]

I’ve moved some posts from Live Radio to here that have been referencing issues with the same DR stations so that all are together.

The issue has not been solved yet and so I have removed the ‘solution’ flag above.

@connor for info.

Hi @BrianW ,

Thanks for merging and giving us a heads-up on the additional reports! The issue is in the dev team’s queue, though I don’t have any updates at the moment. We’ll keep you posted as we continue looking, feel free to merge any other related reports here, thanks!

@noris: This evening from around 19:00 and until now 21:36 Danish standard time. I have played DR P2, DR P1 and DR P8. It seems these channels are now on time also in their high bitrate versions (AAC 320 kbps for P1 and P2 and MP3 192 kbps for P8). So it seems the problem has been partly corrected or maybe did not appear today.

I have, however, had 4 incidents of stopped streaming at around 19:24, 20:07, 21:12 and 21:49. As described initially when opening this case, I should have a close to ideal setup when it comes to internet connection and ethernet cabling, and I do not have similar issues with streams that stop when I watch internet-based television etc.

@noris … and this morning at around 06:30, DR P2 was again out of sync (30 minutes delay, I think) on the AAC 320 kbps stream.

Hi @kassoe,

Thank you for the post. At this point, we don’t require any further technical information - development has identified the problem and the ticket is in the pipeline for implementation.

When this ticket has completed review, the fix will be available in the Early Access section. We’ll notify you here when that occurs. Thank you for your patience.

Is there any news regarding DR P1 stopping playing?

It seems that the problem with 30 minutes delay of the DR high res streams has been solved without beeing announced here, but I still experience occasional stops. Since my earlier posts I have changed cables so that my Roon Nucleus connects directly to the router, and, just in case, I also switched the router to a fresh one sent from by internet provider. From what I can gather, the issue with streaming that stops, still stems from the Roon software. I mostly listen to DR P2 and P8. @connor, could you give us an update on how things are going?

I also experience occasional stops when listening to DR P1, it’s very annoying.

Back in september 2024 I made this ticket

It was marked solved by Roon, because I have no experience with QoS settings and I didn’t understand why I can play hi res Qobuz with no problem but not low res radio stream without the stream stopping.

In this current thread I got the impression that Roon Support admitted the problem is a software problem they will solve. But that was back in November. Does this mean that I have to look into QoS? (And is it possible that this will solve the problem?)

Hi @kassoe,

The team has not yet implemented the aforementioned fix that would affect this issue, but we can certainly inquire as to the current status of the investigation.

The underlying mechanism for the 30-minute delay was a disagreement in HLS implementation between DP and what RoonServer expected. As of this writing, we haven’t merged a chance that would resolve that issue.

Dropouts during radio playback can have numerous causes and will depend highly on a) the specific error message reported in the UI and b) the network pathway serving both RoonServer and the affected endpoint.

When we last visited @Hans_N’s diagnostics, we didn’t see dropouts between the station and RoonServer, but accumulated sample loss in the network was breaking the audio stream to the endpoint from RoonServer. For this reason, we recommended investigating whether any QoS settings were interfering with RoonServer’s bandwidth allocation.

That said, we can most easily troubleshoot this issue if both of you provide the following, at your convenience, of course:

  1. an approximate timestamp of the last dropout you experience with P2 or P8.
  2. whether you experience any other dropouts if you attempt to stream other radio stations instead immediately after the dropout
  3. the particular error message displayed (if any) in the Roon UI after the dropout occurs.

We’ll watch for your response. Thank you!

Hi @connor - thank you for following up. Re. the delay I was mistaken as I did not play the 320 kbps stream. When doing that, the 30 minutes delay and repetition of the high res stream is still present. An update your teams efforts will be appreciated.

This evening when playing the 192 kbps DR P8 stream I had many stops. Some time stamps are 21:33, 21:58 and 22:31, and there were quite a few more. Immediately after a stop I was able to play another station (BBC 3) and also the same station (DR P8), and this is how it usually is when the stream stops.

I include a screen dump of the error message which displays only briefly after a stop. This is the usual message which I have seen countless times.

Hi @kassoe,

Thanks for the additional information! The development ticket for this issue is still in development, so no new updates quite yet, but active work is going into it!

@connor - did you look into my log on the times mentioned in my post dated Mar 17? FYI I have since tried to use also a different Roon server on my home network, and I had streams stopping also in such a setup.

Hey @kassoe,

All logs have been shared with our development team team who are investigating the issue further. Once new information is shared with us we’ll update you here - thank you for your patience! :raised_hands:

@benjamin - thank you for this update. I do hope for progress before too long.
However much I like Roon when it works, I can unfortunately as of now not recommend my Danish friends to get onboard.

Hello @kassoe ,

We appreciate your understanding, and we too hope that we can resolve this sooner than later. We’ll let you know once we have any further updates on the ticket, thanks!

Unfortunately I have to agree. At least if you - like me - also use Roon for radio-listening. The streams stopping is very frustrating. And that’s how it has been since September 2024 or before.

I get the same error message as @kassoe (“Unable to play this station. Its address may have changed, or it may be temporarily unavailable”) and last time it happened was today at 9.20 (Copenhagen time)

Hi @kassoe and @Hans_N,

I wanted to follow up to let you know we still have a ticket in our development queue to address this issue. Unfortunately, progress has been quite slow - albeit not forgotten!

I don’t have any additional updates to share, you have my apologies for the long delay here. :-1:

Hi @benjamin
Thank you. It’s much appreciated that you keep us updated. And it’s appreciated that you are working to find a solution to this problem that is especially annoying to me these months as I listen a lot more radio than music, so my feelings about Roon is much lower that usual. Thanks again and I’ll keep my fingers crossed that you find a solution very soon!

PS: I tried streaming via Airplay (still from Roon) but same problem.

@benjamin, thanks for reporting that the case is delayed. I am, however, underwhelmed by the lack of progress and your team’s priorities.
To reiterate and clarify, you are dealing with a case in which apparently all Danish users are continuously interrupted when playing a handful of the best available national non-commercial radio stations with pop, jazz, classical and regional and national news.
When trying to play the available high quality 320 kbps streams (which are the ones users in Denmark should be able play), we get them with 30 minutes delay and after the first segment has played, we get a continuous repetition of those 30 minutes. When we play the lower quality 128 / 192 kbps mp3 streams (which I consider a temporary workaround due to Roon’s problems with HLS), they often stop and need to be restarted manually. This can sometimes happen dozens of times per hour. Both of these issues have apparently been going on for years (I see it mentioned as far back as 2022 - Some HLS Live Radio Streams Play With 30 Min Delay [Ticket In] - #5 by Hasse_Hagen_Johansen).
I, for one, will still not hesitate to mention Roon for its many merits, but to any Danish person I will also say: DO NOT BUY. Find another solution until this is fixed if you want to be able to listen to the Danish public radio stations (DR = Danish Broadcasting Corporation).
If you don’t see your market growing in Denmark as elsewhere, I think this would be a good explanation. Are your colleagues in charge of prioritization of development and bug fixing aware that this is a general issue which I believe has been affecting all Danish users for years?

Hi @kassoe,

My apologies for the delayed response. We will escalate your very understandable concerns to the relevant teams and inquire as to the status of the ticket with our Development team. We’ll respond here promptly once we know more.
