Two month since my last post, and still nothing new. I hesitate to abandon Roon as I payed lifetime but it seems that DR P1 randomly stops more often now than it did 10 month ago when the problem started. Please fix this issue!
@connor, @benjamin, still no estimate of when the DR high resolution streams will be playable in Roon?
I wonder if the problem affecting the (temporary) low quality DR streams via Roon that keep stopping point to a general problem with Roon? Today I have experienced similar behaviour with streams stopping while playing BBC 3 and Qobuz and this has happened also many times before, albeit not nearly as often as with the DR low quality streams.
Roon support, if you want to check my log files, BBC 3 stopped at 08:49 and Qobuz and 22:10 and 23:13 (Danish summer time). I notice that this thread has already been liked by 21 persons, so a lot more people than those giving voice to the problem seem to be affected.
As explained earlier in this thread, I believe my setup is optimal and a number of other possible explanations have been eliminated already.
I know Roon Support is working hard to solve this problem but it has become unbearable/unusable.
I remember reading a new functionality for Roon so that you can attach a digital source and stream it to your Roon ready endpoints. If I buy a DAC radio can this be attached to my NUC/ROCK unit so that I can listen to Danish Radio this way?
@connor, @benjamin, BBC 3 again stopped playing as well, please check my log at 08:40 Danish summer time today. Also please check the log times submitted above. I support the request from @Hans_N about a workable workaround until you have fixed the underlying problems, this is simply not a satisfactory situation.
I have a NUC. In this tread there is talk about missing codecs: Danish radio will not play links seems outdated
Anyone tried this?
I have had the same issues with roon radio for more than a year now. Since I listen a lot to radio I Can not accept that its not working properly. I have bought lifetime licence for roon but I am really thinking its time to try something else.
Others have mentioned that lack of data processing power causes it. Must say that roon has bloated up to a monster that I personaly dont need. Wish for a roon lite for us redbookers ![]()
@Peter_Dalgas_Kruse, it does not make sense to me that codecs should be missing. The post referred to says that those are supposed to be included in operating system of the end point that actually streams the music. However, I don’t get what the mentioned concept “Background Roon” refers to. Maybe the software proper.
@Peter_Dalgas_Kruse, where did you see the possible issue of lack of processing power mentioned?
@Hans_N, I’ve looked around and don’t see an option in Roon proper to connect an external audio source.
There is however an extension that allows for playing music from e.g. a phone, rooPlay - From LP, CD and iPhone to Roon. Connection is possible either via wifi or USB. However, Roon extensions need to be installed on a Linux server, e.g. a Raspberry Pi, or possibly a virtual Linux server running on an always-on Windows or Mac machine. In short, extensions require an always-on Linux server. They cannot be installed on a Roon server, nor on a Raspberry Pi running the Ropieee end point OS.
@Peter_Dalgas_Kruse, I have had similar thoughts but am somewhat reluctant to move, as I have invested quite a lot in Roon, both in terms of money and time.
Do you have some specific alternative solutions in mind?
@Peter_Dalgas_Kruse and @Hans_N, I just tested my setup here using the devices I have at hand. I can stream DR radio from my phone to my preamp in the living room via bluetooth, but outside of Roon. Unfortunately, it will do away with my Roon multi-room setup when playing radio, and I will need to suspend my carefully thought out on/off system for the amp and subwoofer (approx 20 watt idle power consumption 24/7 if not managed) - and I am also sure my wife will not want to learn how to switch between streaming from phone to Roon and vice versa.
Life is full of hard choices, I did not see it coming, that Roon would be one of them …
@kassoe, thanks for sharing this finding. This actually could be the way to go if Roon Support tells us they have given up solving the problem (but I do not see how I change radio channel). But if (when!) they solve the problem I can see no use of rooPlay (buying a dedicated Raspberry Pi and spending time setting it up). A DAB radio at least I could make use of outside the Roon eco-system.
Anyway I hope Roon Support will give us an honest forecast if and when they will solve this issue.
My solution until now is to airplay radio from my computer to my Raspberry Pi endpoints. Not at all satisfying especially because I spend quite a lot of money buying Roon lifetime ![]()
I tried reinstalling roon operations system:
It Think it made Roon Radio a bit more stabile. I feel there is longer intervals between the “unable to play this station” messages. But they are still coming.
Furthermore P8 jazz page now looks a little different. There is now a description of the Channel I did not have before.
I Got a new router 2 days ago. Got new Ethernet cables Yesterday. Have tried several switches. Upgraded RAM in my NUC. Changed my streamer from SOtM to a sonore. NONE of this have cured this radio issue.
I think I finally solved this problem I have with Roon Radio - and I have even gotten significantly better sound quality overall.
I simply cleared Roons cache. I closed Roon. Using my labtop I entered ROCK/Data/RoonServer and deleted the folder named “Cache”. Roon makes a new when you start it up again.
Actually I copied the folder to the desktop of my labtop before deleting - just in case.
Roon did create a new cache folder and its only about 3 MB. The old cache was 258 MB. So I believe a lot of redundant - and disruptive - data was deleted.
Before deleting the cache Roon Radio would stop every 15-30 mins. So far I have been playing P8 Jazz nonestop for 4 hours now - fingers crossed - knock on Wood.
@Peter_Dalgas_Kruse, thanks for this tip. I have right away tried to clear the cache on my Roon Nucleus (which then restarts) and will report here if it makes a difference.
I just used the web access option to clear the cache. I think that would be an option for you also with Roon Rock. Instructions here (clearing the cache is not mentioned in the text, but the button is shown in the screen shots) -
@Peter_Dalgas_Kruse, no, unfortunately deleting the cache and restarting does not change anything here running a Roon Nucleus. I still have DR P8 Jazz in mp3 192kbs stream stopping several times per hour.
Sorry to hear that. My Roon is a lot more stabile now - but I did have one “unable to play this station” after 30 mins this morning. So it appears that a bad cache is not the actual cause.
