Intermittent issues with Danish Radio streaming quality (30 min Delay HLS Stream) (ref#SOI0FP) [Ticket In]

I have done a few other things to my router that I feel helped Roon stability a little. I have reserved IP-adresses for my NUC and my Sonore Rendu and I have set my Router primary and secondary DNS to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 - because I now I have a Google serverpark nearby.

Thank you @Peter_Dalgas_Kruse and @kassoe for sharing your ideas and findings. It’s very much appreciated.

@kassoe - Maybe you also have a problem with hardware? A faulty cable somewhere in the chain. The router or Nucleus?

@Peter_Dalgas_Kruse of course this is alway a possible fault. But if the problem is related to hardware, how is it possible that streaming from Qobuz or local files never stops? For me the problem is isolated to listening to Danish Radio P1.

@Peter_Dalgas_Kruse, I don’t think so. I have changed my router. I have switched cables. No problems with television 4K. No problems playing the DR HLS streams on a PC via the VLC problem. The problem in Roon is for me mostly related to DR P2 and DR P8. On occasions also BBC, almost never Qobuz and never when playing local files from the Nucleus. Similar problems have been described by many users. Roon support has acknowledged the HLS streaming problem but to my knowledge not commented on the lowres streaming problem for DR radio. I checked if the problem was widely known via ChatGTP and it referred apart from this forum also to some reports in a reddit forum.

Some days have gone by and Roon Radio is back to stopping once or twice an hour. But today the Music stopped whilst playing locally stores files from my SSD. Never tried that before. There was an update today but cant say if thats the cause. Did’nt fix the radio though….

@Peter_Dalgas_Kruse, that is new to me, I am pretty sure music has not stopped here if stored locally on a SSD. I have, however, had some stops when playing from Qobuz.

I have never had stops playing local files or Qobuz (fingers crossed).

Last week I had several days (5 or 6) without P1 stopping (listening about 1-2 hours a day), and I was just minutes from posting this here, but then the stops started again.

Today I started listening to the danish radio station radio4 (www.radio4.dk, this is not DR) because I’m so frustrated with the DR P1 stopping. But radio4 also randomly stops, which means this is not only related to DR.

@Hans_N - I yesterday evening also had lots of stops in my stream, this was while playing Qobuz. This seems to be the norm now.
Roon support @BrianW and @connor - are you around? Please look into my log, it happened several times between 22:00 and 23:30. Why is Roon not attending to this? Is your infrastructure working? This looks more and more like a serious business problem for Roon, I don’t get why we hear nothing from you? I currently think of myself as being way too patient. I should start looking for a way to transition to some other streaming solution, unfortunately …

@kassoe, I have not yet experienced trouble playing Qobuz, but I totally agree that Roon’s approach to this problem is very problematic. At least they could tell to us if they have given up solving it, because then we can look for other solutions. As it is now, I have somehow - perhaps naive as more than a year has passed - confidence that they are working to solve the problem, but their silence does not dress them. Should I stay or should I go?

I have now tried a new streamer too and the problem persist. So now I am sure it is Roon or the NUC I use for it.

I undertook some AI supported research on how to deal with stopping streams in Roon. I assume it has to do with Roon’s RAAT protocol, so I narrowed down on this in the research. Of the recommendations I found, I have tried the following, and so far I have had almost no stops (and none for 24 hours using the numbers mentioned below):

  • Ungroup, I currently only use Roon with two grouped devices (one of which is a trigger device for power supply to my amp and sub).
  • In the MUSE settings, enable Headroom management and set it to 6 dB, and turn off any DSP.
  • Increase cache settings for each device: Loudspeaker icon → gear → device setup → Resync Delay (I have in steps gone from 0 to 3000 ms [EDIT: 4000 ms]), [EDIT: no change of Zone grouping delay, not relevant].

If this does not improve my situation considerably, next step will likely by a Wiim Pro Plus and streaming radio via that unit. I can be used also as a Roon endpoint. If I end up leaving Roon, I may look into LMS as it seems to be able also to deal with my existing collection of ripped albums.

For now, I am setting up a wife-friendly work around, playing radio stations via our Apple TV and television sound system (using the Apple native Music app).

While looking around, I found this post with a lot of positive and negative opinions on Roon - Why I Stopped Using Roon | Audio Science Review (ASR) Forum. Interestingly, the issue with stopping streams is hardly mentioned.

The changes in resync delay described above and using only one Roon end point did reduce the number of times streaming stopped, but there were still stops, on average on or two per day, and the sound quality of DR radio streaming via Roon is still not satisfactory.

I bought and yesterday set up a Wiim Pro. Using it via the Wiim app I was able to set up DR P2 (320 kbps) and DR P8 (256 kbps). Have had both streams playing for several hours with no stops. What a joy, finally to get rid of the muddy radio quality provided by Roon and listening to quality radio with no delay!

My Wiim setup is still provisional, using only one end point. Will give a further update when I have had it playing for a week or two, hopefully with no stops of streaming.

The Wiim Pro can also serve as a Roon endpoint, and the Roon app can be selected as one of the source options in the Wiim app. In that way, I can phase out Roon for all radio listening and retain it for my own music library and Qobuz streaming.

I have tried this and it actually works. For me -6 dB headroom and 2000ms resync delay was the sweet spot. Now I get to stop the Music - after 11-12 hours! Thanks @kassoe

Thank you @kassoe for sharing your findings! I do not listen to radio in grouped zones, but I have tried to set Rezync Delay to 3000. Radio still stops randomly. Now I’ll try 4000 ms to se if this makes any change. If not I’ll try Headroom management although I do not really like the idea to have my NUC to make permanent processing as I have no problems playing Qobuz.

I wonder where Roon Support (@support - is this the right tag?) is? They seem to have silently abandoned this issue. And we are left to find - if possible at all - our own solution. This is not appropriate behavior towards loyal customers who have invested a lot of money - and time - in their product! If Roon can’t find a solution, better be open about it than leave us in the dark.

@connor, @benjamin, @alex_h - would you as official Roon support please give a status on the original issue (HLS streams not working) and the associated problem of way too many stops in streaming, especially of radio (even 96 kbps mp3-streams) and also from Qobuz. Some of the Danish participants in this thread (including some lifetime subscribers) have been very patient with Roon. My patience is about to expire …

This morning my Roon Radio is completly dead. Can’t play ANY station
Tried ANY trick in the book. Clear cache, Restart, reinstall server software - nothing!

@Peter_Dalgas_Kruse - I checked some minutes ago. On Roon I do not get anything playing from DR P2 and DR P8. Other radio stations do play on Roon. Have basically left Roon for radio, using now two Wiim Pro devices that are set up as Roon endpoints. This has worked fine for a couple of weeks with only a few stops and dropouts when playing radio. When playing radio (high-res) it is now through Wiim only. When playing local files and streaming Qobuz I still use Roon through Wiim, and this works. No problem with DR radio through Wiim this morning.

My Roon Radio is playing today - with random stops…

Rezync Delay 4000 ms did not solve it. Now I’ll have to try Headroom.
