Introducing Nucleus One - the most affordable Roon Server ever made!

Gotta say who ever designed it,absolutely killed it,luv the design and was kinda shocked when I seen the price,$499 us so about £420 pounds here in the UK,what’s the cpu that’s in it

We don’t know what the CPU is, but it is almost surely something like an i3 or equivalent. If it weren’t, it would affect user experience and THAT would have been a really bad choice.

@miguelito , agreed… however (and not arguing), my NUC has three USB ports, thunderbolt, HDMI… But I only use one USB port for an external drive (music). On occasion, I use another USB port for a flash drive to make safety backups (other than my Synology).

The One covers the needs of many: One USB port for direct connection to a DAC, and a second USB port for an external drive (music), if needed. One HDMI for multi-channel, and of course Ethernet (but no way to upgrade RAM without voiding the warrantee).

I had an interesting conversation with a friend about the One. He’s surprised that Roon is discontinuing the Nucleus/+ (I’m not surprised), with such a huge price gap between the One and Titan. Of course many of us will fill that gap with a NUC that manages our expectations; my thought was that it’s the perfect way for Roon to support their Partners. This way the Partners investment in “Roon Ready” is maximized, as is the ability for subscribers that already own gear to put it to use as Roon continues to expand their Partner base. Talk about a “win-win” for all.

Cheers.

What is to say that this is based on a NUC, Harman have extensive experience and resources for building hardware.

I guess initially Roon would have used a freely available motherboard (ie NUC) as they didn’t have the resources to construct a custom board. Now they have access to Harman’s resources why do they need to use a NUC design ?

As much I appreciate the Nucleus One, I hope this is not a turning point regarding the support of other platforms like ROCK, MacOS, DSM and Windows?

Why would they try to broaden the possible user base with a cheaper Nucleus just to cut off a much larger user base with other servers? Makes no sense. The angst on this forum sometimes…

Great…1 month ago I have bought Nucleus for 1500 eur and now here is "just tha same but plastic’ box for 500…Feels like a stupid.

@jamie Any word if it supports HDMI CEC?

Because they could. Because it could make sense in terms of support. It would streamline things and rid them off a nagging DIY population of their customer base. Not yet convinced it will remain as of now. Well, we all will see in a couple of months.

Sure, they could do many things. Doesn’t mean that being worried by the most remote possibilities is a good use of one’s time.

Yes, getting rid of 90%-or-so of their user base. I doubt that this would be a successful strategy

Well at least they now offer an option that can be agreeable for many if not most. And then Roon may develop into a customer base that can be supported way better.
No need to convince each other.

Right, looking at the rear panel I would be more inclined to say that this is not an “off the shelf” component in a custom case.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see at least one more product announcement come from Roon that fills the gap between models in the not too distant future. The One seems like an addition to the lineup to me with the new lower target price-point.

And again no further information on being suitable for e.g. processing of (multichannel) DSD with e.g. convolution. Also not for the Titan.
They try to sell hardware and don’t give any information on what roon functions are supported in a reasonable way in RL. This is very disappointing.
Or can we assume that every nucleus model is able to handle any audio processing that is offered by the roon software and attached endpoints? Without any exception?

Where did you see this? If so, a complete break from the current Nucleus support position.

Well, the writing was on the wall. It’s not been concealed that there have been some changes to both the company and the product lineup (Titan) in recent months. We’ve been expecting some more announcements and new hardware is very welcome, I am pretty sure this won’t be the last change coming.

I think they would need to broaden their worldwide support for availability to purchase and repair the nucleus, no one wants to mail or self ship something like this to a dealer in another city or country even.
And some of the replacement Roon motherboard pricing I have seen are eye watering if they are true.

In fact, they told us in January that new models would be announced in March.

@Rugby , on the Facebook Roon Labs page.

One could think that Harman/Samsung have the logistics capabilities for this, right?

And a good used mini can sell for less than half of the $500 asking price, have the same features and then some, and likely last just as long.
