Can confirm for both iOS 27.0 and iPadOS 27.0 with HomePod OS 27.0 on 1st-gen HomePod. I tried power cycling the HomePod but no joy. The Roon client UI shows playback starting, progress, and signal path as usual, but there is no audio. EDIT: Also confirmed no joy from MacOS 27.0 Roon client. It looks like Airplay 2 support is broken.
HomePod streaming from Roon over Airplay2 has been working flawlessly for months, just updated device to iOS27, Roon still sees all the devices over the network, when pressing play, there is no sound.
I just tested my Denon AVR-A1H that is Roon Ready but also has AirPlay 2 support. In AirPlay 2 mode, it works with iPadOS 27.0 client and Roon Server on MacOS 27.0, so it may not be all AirPlay 2 but just HomePods… EDIT: ditto for my Kef LS50 Wireless IIs in AirPlay 2 mode. They work.
I can confirm the same issue after updating my HomePods and Apple TVs to OS 27.
My setup is a Roon ROCK server (RoonOS 2.1 build 271 / Roon Server 2.71 build 1683). Everything was working perfectly with the exact same setup before the OS 27 updates.
Some additional testing which may help:
Roon still discovers the HomePods / Apple TVs correctly as AirPlay 2 devices.
Playback starts normally in Roon: the track progresses and the signal path is displayed, but there is absolutely no audio.
Direct AirPlay from Apple Music on my iPhone to the same HomePods works normally, so the HomePods, network and audio output themselves are working.
I removed one of my existing HomePod/Apple TV audio configurations from Roon and recreated it from scratch.
Initially the Apple TV pairing/code process did not trigger. After changing the Apple TV AirPlay access settings, I was able to pair it with Roon again.
The newly created AirPlay 2 zone is detected and enabled normally in Roon, but playback is still completely silent.
So in my case, device discovery and AirPlay pairing/zone creation are working. The failure appears to occur when Roon actually streams audio to HomePodOS/tvOS 27.
I have six HomePod 2s and two Apple TVs affected by the OS 27 update, and the issue appeared immediately after the update.
Hopefully this additional information can help narrow down the issue.
I saw your post saying that you managed to downgrade one of your HomePods to 26.6, and that Roon started working perfectly again afterwards.
Could you please explain how you managed to downgrade it?
I have a 2nd generation HomePod (the full-size model, not a HomePod mini), and as far as I can see there is no USB-C port available to connect it to a Mac for a manual restore.
Was the HomePod you downgraded a HomePod 2, or was it a HomePod mini?
If it was a HomePod 2, I’d be very interested to know the procedure you used
Thanks for clarifying! No worries
Unfortunately, mine are HomePod 2s, so no easy downgrade for me.
I guess Apple just gave me the perfect excuse : just ordered a pair of Cambridge Audio L/R X to try with Roon
Thanks again!
Hello @Michael_Maslen, and thanks to everyone who tested in here.
We pulled logs from one of the affected servers and they match what you have all described.
Roon reaches HomePods and Apple TVs over AirPlay 1. In these logs every AirPlay 2 session setup is refused by the speaker, so the connection falls back to AirPlay 1, and from there everything reports success: the zone connects, volume is accepted, the stream starts, the speaker acknowledges it. OS 27 then does not play the audio. That is why the progress bar advances and Signal Path is drawn over silence.
This is not specific to Roon. Rogue Amoeba have published the same finding for AirPlay 1 on tvOS 27 and HomePodOS 27, and filed it with Apple as FB24452968:
We have raised this with R&D. We do not have a timeframe.
Two things worth doing in the meantime.
If any of your HomePods or Apple TVs have not updated yet, please turn automatic updates off. For HomePod: Home app > Home Settings > Software Update > Automatic Updates. For Apple TV: Settings > System > Software Updates > Automatically Update.
And please send Apple feedback, at
and
. Volume matters here, and you can reference FB24452968.
Non-Apple AirPlay 2 endpoints and Roon Ready zones are unaffected, so those remain an option for now.
Like others, I am very skeptical of any fix from Apple anytime soon. I managed to turn off Automatic updates and to kill the one download that was in progress by powering off the HomePod mini stereo pair.
Add me to the list. I upgraded my Homepods to homeOS 27. Since then no sound from all HomePods via roon (all devices are visible in roon) - it is possible to direct the audio stream to each of the devices but no sound - animation in Roon tells it is running).
Airplay from my idevices and Macs to the HomePods works fine.
My roon server (MacMini) is still running macOS 26 (thought it would be fine to wait some days. ;-).
Removing the Homepods from the Home APP and adding them eventually didn’t work - still no sound from the HomePods via Roon.
So my only hope in moment is that upgrading my Mac mini to macOS 27 will fix the problem.
Will do this in the evening and report on this later.
Now macOS runs Roon server on macOS27. Still no sound - very annoying. So homeOS 27 is broken for third party users. Is this true also for people outside Europe?
Since updating all Apple TV’s and HomePods to the latest version, none of the devices wil play audio. Roon is showing as connected and streaming music, however no audio at any volume can be heard. Is this just me or are others experiencing similar issues?
All other other Roon endpoints and speakers are working fine. Just Apple devices after upgrading.
Same issue for me and my 4x HomePod Minis. Managed to reset and restore v26.6 on all of them and all work fine via Roon again. Disabled Automatic Updates for now.
