Describe your network setup

eero pro 6e mesh network. core (macOS) and most endpoints connected to mesh nodes per cable

@ReneR, Roon does not recommend using managed switches and Powerline adapters for network connections. Managed switches, due to their management capabilites, may interfere with the network stream in a way unmanaged switches do no, and Powerline adapters tend to be unreiliable in terms of throughput and connectivity (but not always).

Can you explain your network configuration in more detail as it relates to the switch(es) and Powerline adapters? Just what is connected to what?

@Robert_F sure.
All of the Roon related equipment is connected to the Eero Pro 6e Mesh, either per Ethernet or WLAN. Those connections appear to be very stable, there are usually no interruptions in established streams. Nearly all endpoints are Roon Ready.
So, Internet, RoonServer and one endpoint are connected to master node of mesh per Ethernet cable. Remainder of endpoints to various other mesh nodes, either per cable or wirelessly.

Some IoT stuff in remote parts of the house are connected via PowerLine, but no audio.
There are no managed switches on the network.

Once the stream is established it usually is very reliable. It is the RoonServer that ends up non responsive without giving any particular reason why.

to give some additional info to prevent the obvious remarks:

  • all SW components are on the latest build level (OS, RoonServer, etc.)
  • all Roon components run the same Roon build level
  • all components are on the same subnet
  • Roon Server runs on M1 MacMini, all power savings advices from forum taken
  • MacMini is run pretty much headless, RoonWorkload shared with some file synching and backup tasks
  • running a combination of local library and Tidal streams - but as said, streams are fine. Server stack keeps being unresponsive.

in this situation I cannot even restart the server service, only a full reboot does it

A post was split to a new topic: Feedback on Using Roon for 5+ years

@ReneR, everything seems in order, but I wonder if any of the power savings settings may be affecting your server. I don’t have an Apple Silicon Mac (yet) so not sure what else could be causing what you are experiencing.

Roon is off today (a bank holiday in the US) but this is in their queue so they will contact you soon.

Mesh WiFi is known to “cause problems” when the client, while trying to communicate with the server, switches to another node (which is what the mesh nodes are supposed to do, of course).

It’s quite difficult to prove what happening as node switching is unpredictable. The easiest way to check is to switch off all nodes, except the master, for a few hours and see if the problem persists.

Hi @ReneR,

Do you use Roon Remote on the same machine on which you’ve installed RoonServer?

Diagnotics indicate that RoonServer is regularly restarting on this machine despite no indications of a freeze or other UI symptoms.

Do you have a reliable Backup that you’ve recently created? We’d like to try a fresh RoonServer instance on this machine entirely to clear up conditions.

  • Make a Backup of your current RoonServer Database
  • Exit out of RoonServer
  • Navigate to your RoonServer’s Database Location
  • Find the folder that says “RoonServer”
  • Rename the “RoonServer” folder to “RoonServer_old”
  • Reinstall the RoonServer App from our Downloads Page to generate a new RoonServer folder
  • On the Roon Remotes, press “Use another Roon Server” and connect to the new database

Thanks Connor, will do. But will take a bit of time.
Roon Remote is used on same machine.
Will update when I know more
