Describe the issue

I recently migrated my server from MacOS to a QNAP NAS. After making backups and installing RoonServer on the QNAP, I re-named the database folders on my Mac Library and deleted and reinstalled Roon. I connected to the new QNAP server instance and restored my latest backup (all prior to logging in). Once restored, I clicked re-launch and was able to connect to the QNAP server again and then was prompted to sign back into Roon. It launched the browser, I signed in and it re-opened the Roon app, the Roon logo spun for a moment saying "Logging In", then disappeared and nothing happened. I was still left with the log-in page.

I tried a number of troubleshooting steps, including disabling my VPN, Firewall and AdGuard on my Mac, completely deleting all Roon folders from my Mac's Library and re-installing the app, deleting and reinstalling the new server instance on the QNAP, restoring from a week old backup, clearing all log-ins from my Roon account, re-setting my password and enabling MFA. I also tried all of this from my Windows laptop. No matter what I did I had the same experience when trying to log-in.

Everything seams to go smoothly in the process up until the log-in issue, however, the only odd thing that occurred was that prior to restoring from backup, the name of my QNAP NAS was shown for the discovered server when it was freshly installed, but after restoring from backup, the name appeared as a series of question mark icons (). Not sure if this is of any importance, but figured I would mention it.

Hey @Ronald_Tracey,

Thanks for taking the time to write in, it’s good to see you on community again! Sorry to hear its an issue that prompted your recent post.

I’m seeing this as well from your account page, you can typically edit the name of your Roon Server by heading to Roon Settings>Setup>Roon Server Name

While I don’t think it has anything to do with your login issue, it’s certainly a worthy thing to take note of!

It looks like you’re currently using the Mac as your server, could you please reproduce the login loop issue and share the specific date and time? From there, we can enable diagnostics for the NAS when running Roon Server, and should be able to take a closer look.

I also would like to confirm: are all of your devices running Roon on the same local subnet within your network? Roon isn’t going to be able to function across multiple subnets, unfortunately. I’d see about creating as simple of a network setup as possible, and see if your issue still persists.

Lastly, does the same issue happen across multiple web browsers?

Hey @benjamin ,

Thank you for the reply! Yes, unfortunate to have to post about an issue after all these years. I’ve migrated my server a couple times before with no issues.

Regarding your last question, yes, all of my devices are running on the same subnet.

I just did a fresh install of RoonServer on my NAS and restored the latest backup today (4/30/24) and got the login loop at 2:04 PM EST using Firefox this time, instead of Chrome.

I will say, after doing some more troubleshooting this past week - I am concerned that the question marks in the server name after restore may not be the issue, but possibly a symptom of bad backup(s)? I tried connecting to my NAS with a fresh server install (not restoring from backup) and had no trouble logging in and was prompted to de-authorize my Mac. I then tried restoring from a backup through the settings menu and it took me down the same path ending in the login loop.

Appreciate any help you can give. Hoping I can avoid having to start fresh.

Hey @Ronald_Tracey,

Thanks for the detailed follow up!

This is a key piece of information, and our development team would like to further see the Roon Server logs and Varlog from the NAS - we’re not able to connect to the device currently, would you please use the directions found here and send over a set of Roon Server logs from the NAS to our File Uploader?

Thanks @benjamin - just uploaded.

Hey @benjamin just checking in on this. Thanks.

Hi @Ronald_Tracey,

You have my extreme apologies for the long delay! We have a ticket in with our development team to investigate further - it’s not something we come across often.

Could you also include one of the backups you’ve restored from, that has caused you the issue?

  1. Zip up your RoonBackups folder (right-click it and select “Compress…”):
  2. Submit the .zip file to us through our Database Issues portal

Our QA team will take a closer look into the database specifically for further insight. Thanks for your continued patience

No problem, uploaded overnight. Hope it helps to diagnose the issue.

Hi @Ronald_Tracey,

Two additional things to check while we work on attempting to reproduce this in house:

  1. Can you review the QNAP firewall and ensure Roon has proper exceptions?
  2. Do the question mark icons appear when using a fresh database? Or, is it only when restoring from your existing backup.

Hi @benjamin ,

  1. Yes I believe I’ve given it the proper exceptions. In my various troubleshooting steps I still had the log-in issue with the firewall disabled entirely, and I was able to log-in to a fresh database install with it enabled.

  2. I only get the icons after restoring from any of my backups. For a fresh database it displays the name of my QNAP NAS.

Hi @Ronald_Tracey,

A few follow up questions for you while our team further inspects your database:

Does the issue persist when restoring the database from another device, not a QNAP specifically? (If you have another device you could setup as a temporary roon server.)

Back on the Mac, what happens if you temporarily disable your watched folders and create a fresh backup to test if the same issue occurs?

Or create a new backup from the mac to a new directory/location?

Hi @benjamin ,

Well I think I’ve messed things up in that regard, because I deleted the database from my Mac back when I was first having issues logging into the QNAP instance cause I thought it may have been interfering somehow. This was before I was aware that my backups were corrupted, so I figured I could always restore if needed. I do have some Time Machine backups I’ll try to restore the database from, but based on my reading on the forum, that may not work either.

I just tried restoring a couple different backups on the Mac and it’s giving me the same login loop issue and it’s showing the icons for server name when I open up Roon on my iPad.

Unfortunately I don’t have another device I could try restoring on, but this seems to confirm the issue is with the backups. So unless there’s some way to fix the backup files I guess I may be stuck starting from scratch…

Hey @Ronald_Tracey,

Thanks for the update and I’m sorry to hear the situation -

I’d like to learn a bit more about your TimeMachine setup, as it could potentially be the culprit behind your corrupted backups.

Did you have TimeMachine overlapping any folders associated with Roon, or that Roon was actively watching? Did you ever have TimeMachine running while Roon was also saving a backup?

TimeMachine can be a bit tricky, and typically doesn’t play well with Roon. We advise that if you really need to run both, be sure to exclude all instances of Roon and associated folders from TimeMachine, and vice versa with Roon.

Hey @benjamin

Sorry for the slow reply. Yes, I did have Time Machine backing up my mac’s library folders, so it would have been backing up the database. My Roon backups folder and music files were on an external drive that was excluded from TM backups though.

I had TM running backups daily and as I’m sure you’re aware it doesn’t offer very fine grained control over when those backups occur, so it’s very possible it may have run at the same time as a Roon backup.

That’s good to know - in the future if I ever run a database on my Mac again, I will be sure to exclude all Roon data.

At this point, I think I’m probably going to start fresh with a new install on my QNAP since it’s unlikely I’ll be able to get a restore to work. Let me know if the development team thinks otherwise though. I appreciate all your help!

Hey @Ronald_Tracey,

I’d also try to avoid having both programs perform backups at the same time, if at all possible!

There isn’t much else our team can do, unfortunately. I hope the rebuilding of your local library isn’t too cumbersome for you moving forward. :crossed_fingers:
