Issue with playing hi-res Tidal music in Roon after subscription upgrade (ref#QG5V18) [Resolved with Build 1401]

The KEF Connect app release note states that it supports Tidal MAX. Are you using the latest version of KEF Connect app (not Tidal app, not Roon)?

Thanks. Yes you are right it works when using the KEF app

I hadn’t tested it but don’t tend to use it as not the greatest app/ interface. Tidal Connect via the KEFs doesn’t work. Soon as up and running in Roon will be all good

Having said that the KEF app just says HI-RES. Unfortunately the labelling seems quite ambiguous… it could just mean MQA no way of telling if and when a true hi res file

From their release note Dec 23

  • Removed MQA label in TIDAL list view
  • Introduce Hi-Res label for both MQA and Hi-Res Flac files in TIDAL list view

When playing via the KEF Connect app, Tidal hires FLAC files are played as such, see screenshot below.

I see ok got it
I must be conditioned to a previous tidal way of presenting it… thanks guys for pointing me in the right direction

E.g. in Audirvana it’s already been implemented since last year:

You’ll have on Audirvana with the same quality as on TIDAL (depending on the album, you may encounter the same track on different albums having different quality).

Eversolo also have not updated Tidal Connect to Hires yet

Trying to read this thread since I dropped Tidal in the summer….Just to reconfirm…I re subscribed to Tidal HiFi + and tested via Roon and into my DAC,
Track showing 192 but MQA but DAC still processing 44 or 48 16 bit

Denafrips Terminator II via GAIA DDC

So not there yet

Just as a side note … even though I have HiFi + i stream at HIFI and upsample X2 on tracks to 44-88khz or 96khz to my DAC via Roon … the really good Hi Rez that are “Mastered” really well at 96khz or 192 - I go to Qobuz … if it has the Albums … I noticed - 10-15% of albums/tracks missing compared to tidal and the ultimate in way of Library in my opinion Spotify :face_with_peeking_eye: :zipper_mouth_face:

I moved some things around and found the ethernet cable wasn’t long enough to reach my Gold Note DS-10. So I connected the Silent Angel M1T to the network, and then USB out to the Gold Note. sounds good, but also brings Tidal Connect to the table via the M1T, and allows me to compare the same album in Roon, which still plays as MQA, with it’s “HiRes” counterpart in TC.

my initial reaction is Roon sounds better, TC sounding flat, non-dynamic, rolled off, in comparison. Could be Roon, could be MQA, could be both.

could just be me.

Well the day finally arrived (at least for those of us early adopters/risk takers)! Suddenly all my Tidal MQA files are disappearing and being replaced with FLAC files. And damn, wouldn’t you know it, after years bestowing honor on Qobuz’s unadulterated FLAC masters, now a tiny voice in my head is trying to make me wonder if I’ve lost something! Cognitive bias is a terrible thing—as is FOMO. VERY expensive. :face_holding_back_tears:

It worked for me, did you try to view different versions of the album? because once I did on the same mqa album, it showed the hi-res Flac versions to add to the library.

Tidal Max was introduced by Roon this morning in the Early Access release. As Roon explained, some of the albums will be mislabeled as MQA until Roon is able to get everything converted and aligned, etc.

For me, most of my Tidal MQA labeled albums play as Flac files in the Roon signal path. A few still play as MQA because Tidal has not replaced them with Flac.

It would be nice if you could provide the track or album so others can see if the same things are happening. From my prospective I have not noticed MQA being taken away from albums I have listened to in the past.

You don’t have Tidal MAX yet unless you’re running Roon Early Access and updated today.

I have a mix of both—the “major” artists and releases have mostly transitioned to FLAC while some of the lesser-known albums I have in my library remain MQA. And I’ve confirmed that these correlate with what I’m showing in the Tidal app.

Tidal hasn’t completely finished their migration yet, and from what I’ve read in the early access release notes, Roon hasn’t either.

I did notice one oddity—I first updated my iPhone app to the early access release first, and had to manually update my desktop software/server because for a time the stable release version was higher than the beta. Before I updated the server itself, the Max tier was not selectable in the Roon remote iPhone app, the Master tier still was—and the other selections were a bizarre mix of new and old. It wasn’t until I upgraded the server that Max became selectable and the migration began silently in the background (there was no spinning wheel indicating Tidal was updating but new files were being added to my library pretty much constantly for a couple of hours).

I think it’s done now, at least for the time being. All of the original MQA files are still residing on Tidal’s server—which is another oddity. I can still access quite a few of mine but I have no control of how to select it. I noticed that under the “general” tab in the settings it still has the “Prefer MQA/CD Quality” dropdown menu—asking me how to prioritize MQA. Any guesses on how that’s functioning now?

I have the Tidal Hi-Fi Plus and I see MAX and MQA tracks both in Roon and outside of Roon. When selecting a MQA track my DAC that is connected to Roon is showing that it’s MQA audio, so not sure what you mean early access, etc. Seems to be working for me unless I’m not understanding what you’re saying. -Thanks

Early Access is Roon’s public beta program. See:

Unless you are using the early access builds of Roon for your server, Windows and MAC clients and/or ARC, you will not see the TIDAL MAX tracks (HiRes FLAC - without MQA encoding) in Roon because it is not yet avaible for production Roon builds.

If you using the Early Access builds, and have updated over the last couple of days, then you will be able to see the Tidal MAX tracks.

See (Posted Yesterday in the Early Access catagory):

It’s coming!!!

When will the production version be released?
I have a Rhein Z1 Plus server and I can’t use the beta version - early access.
