Issue with Roon losing connection to audio device every 30 seconds (ref#K146EO)

Full form submission

What’s happening?

I'm having trouble playing music

What best describes your playback issue?

Music stops playing mid-track

Roon constantly loses the connection to the audio device every 30 seconds, this happens when I connect to Sonos via WiFi, as well as when I listen directly on my cell phone. Roon works without any problems when connected to the network player via Ethernet, I've had this problem for approx. 5 weeks, I've already tried a lot, unplugging the power cable, shutting everything down and restarting it,

Hello,
sounds like a wifi interference problem, try to set your wifi to another channel

hopes this helps
Marco

Hello Marco, thanks for the tip, unfortunately I don’t know how to set a different WLAN channel… in the meantime I’ve tried some more, Roon’s behavior is very strange, sometimes I can hear for 20 minutes at a time, then it all comes back The connection failure lasted 30 seconds, it was purely arbitrary

As @Marco_van_Leeuwen said, that’s most likely some WiFi contention. Roon RAAT is very sensitive to packet drop/retransmit, which can happen when multiple WiFi devices try to use the same channel. Those can be devices on your WLAN, or on the WLANs of your neighbors. I had a similar issue during the pandemic when all my neighbors were doing video calls from home and I was trying to listen through a wireless endpoint in my garden at the same time.

One extreme version of this problem is if your Roon server is connected to your router by WiFi and you are streaming from a service like Qobuz. In that situation, there are frequent WiFi bursts as the Roon server downloads big chunks of the playing music from the service so as to buffer them for local delivery. If your endpoint happens to be using the same WLAN channel, interruption is very likely.

You seem to be having the same issue as me. I have narrowed it down a bit, it cuts out exactly at 29 seconds for me on any SONOS device that is S2, but an older model. My SONOS devices that are S2 but a newer hardware revision do not have this issue.

From what I found, I can play up to 24bit48khz (native SONOS support) through Tidal, Plex and directly through the SONOS library.

For those saying it is SONOS signal, I have gone through the support matrix and all devices are green. It also happens to the older S2 models that are hardwired. This only started happening after the latest SONOS firmware update to version 16.

Hi @Detlef_Piest,

Apologies for the long delay in replying to your thread!

Are you able to setup a hardwired system in a more permanent sense?

Are you still running into bandwidth issues? Let me know your current status!

Hello Benjamin

Thank you for asking. I tried a few things, I changed the channel in the router as was recommended to me. Unfortunately it didn’t help either. I tried to install the Sonos Booster to get a LAN connection, but I didn’t succeed, it’s probably Sonos’ fault.
The problem still exists, Roon still loses connection. But I found a completely unconventional solution to turn it off again. If I press the play button very quickly in succession and then stop again, i.e. play/stop very quickly in succession (like 5-6 times), then the problem no longer occurs for a while. I can live with that for now.

Many greetings Detlef

Hi @Detlef_Piest,

Thanks for the update!

Are you able to review the UPnP lease timer from your network settings?

Hello Benjamin and all.
I experience the exact same issue on a pair of Sonos play:1 through Sonos 2. The stream breaks up during play and freezes on the spot 30 seconds after I press play. Roon plays without interruption on other Sonos and blue sound equipment in the same system. Tidal and more works fine on the same speakers through the Sonos app.

I’ve tried to find the UPnP lease time value on my system but sorry to say couldn’t find where to read it.

Kind regards
Anders
