After I updated to latest version of Roon (version 2.0, build 1401) it has not been working. I get the message "Waiting for your Roon server" about ever 30 seconds, after which it restarts. On the menu bar when I click the Roon icon the 'Roon Server Status" changes every few seconds from 'started' to 'running' to 'error' to 'Not responding'. I have not changed anything else - same latest version MacBook Pro running Sonoma 14.4.1, and internet is fine with normal download speeds 40-50 Mbps.
Official support is Mon-Fri, so Benjamin will be around then to respond. But, your playlists are stored in your backup, so, you would restore a backup.
Hi Benjamin, I’ve tried multiple attempts and multiple ways of restoring my backup (in unwatched folders) and they fail every time. Initially I can play a track and then within a minute the problem recurs (“Waiting for your Roon server” and then tries to restart).
I’ve tried multiple backups (in case one was corrupted) and they all failed.
I ended up creating two backup folders (a new one with a few new playlists I made and the old one with all my previous playlists) in my “files” folder and when Roon failed to find the server for my old restored backup I logged out and then restored the backup with the new playlist backup and it works, so it seems to be a problem accessing my restored old backup files.
What next?
Thanks for the update! Could you please send over a set of Roon Server logs for our team to review? You can use the directions found here and send over a set of logs to our File Uploader.
I’m hoping we can identify the specific issue tied to your older backups from your Roon Server logs.
Thanks for sharing your logs. Our team was able to review them, and see some errors in relation to Time Machine on the Mac. Do you have Time Machine active on the device? If so, it’s important to have Time Machine ignore all files and folders associated with Roon, as it can cause issues in relation to Roon backups.
Because the Roon database is frequently being updated in the background with new metadata, cover art, artist information, and more, backing up your “live” Roon database using external programs can result in corrupt backups.
Okay, that seems to answer the problem. Though I had been using Roon for several years with Time Machine backups without any problems - the problem only started with the latest Roon update.
I don’t have Time Machine active on my Mac when running Roon - I only connect my external HDD for Time Machine backups and when it is done I disconnect the external HDD. I can’t recall a time when I was running Roon and did a Time Machine backup at the same time. And I’m still using Time Machine for my regular MacBook backups and its been fine with my new Roon playlists. Also, If I set Time Machine to ignore all Roon files then how do I backup my Roon database/playlist? And which folders are you recommending Time Machine ignore - Roon, RoonGoer, RoonServer &/or RoonBackups?
The bottom line, it seems, is a corrupt backup. Is there a way of fixing this or accessing a different backup (either from Roon database or my various Time Machine ones)? Otherwise is there a way I can extract the playlist data to reconstruct my old playlist with my current Roon?
@Suedkiez is correct with the above info! The only thing Time Machine should touch is your Roon Backups folder, and ensure Roon Server is stopped and or off when Time Machine is in the backup process.
Thanks Benjamin, that clarifies the backups, and maybe how they got corrupted.
And, as per my last post, how can I recovery my old playlists? I had hundreds of tracks and can’t recall most of them to reconstruct from memory.
The only way you’ll be able to recover your playlists is by successfully restoring a saved backup. Perhaps you can attempt to move the location of your current backup (to a location completely separate of Time Machine) and attempt another restore.
Outside of that, there isn’t currently any other way to restore previously saved local playlists. You can always sync any playlists made from Tidal/Qobuz/KKBox.
Yes, now synching Tidal playlist which is stored on cloud and bypasses the issue.
To close, I do want to restate that the issue only began after the Roon software update - I hadn’t done a backup or changed anything else and as soon as I updated Roon the issue began. This would argue against a Roon backup being corrupted by a Time Machine backup.
Thanks for all your help Benjamin, but a disappointing outcome.
