Describe the issue

Hello Community
I have a Mac Mini (M2) running as Roon Server for 2 years. Connecting to it from my MacBook Pro, iPhone, iPad and via ARC also for years.
Earlier today I was offered updates when starting Roon on my MacBook Pro (M1) which I allowed to update on all devices. Afterwards my local audio was gone, despite the audio zone selected.
Looking up my Mac Mini I found my Roon server crashed and restarted it. Now when selecting my MacBook Pro as audio zone the music plays locally, and also on my Mac Mini!
Now it becomes weird ... I deactivated the Mac Mini system output on the server but it continues playing on the Mac Mini w/o an audio zone selected.
Neither can I limit the audio to my local Roon copy on the MacBook nor can I scan for other audio devices available through RAAT. I guess this is supposed to be a self-discovery protocol but it leaves my clueless

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance and best regards
Ingo

Describe your network setup

Home Wifi with Fritz!Box 5690 Pro as fiber modem and 4060 mesh repeaters.

Hey @Ingo_Adlung,

Thanks for taking the time to write in!

To confirm, you’re having issues with your local system output on the MacBook pro - can you please navigate to macOS System Settings > Privacy & Security > Local Network , and make sure Roon is allowed. If it is already enabled, toggle it off and on again. Then reboot your Mac, and see if the same issue persists.

Are you able to share a screenshot of when your Mac Mini running Roon Server is playing audio without any zones enabled?

It would be good to review your Roon Settings>Audio page as well.

After the above, let’s see if refreshing your RAATServer database may help.

You can generate a new RAATServer instance on your device by following these instructions, but please be aware that this will reset your Roon Settings → Audio Tab to factory settings and I would advise making a backup of any custom DSP settings you have:

  • Create a Backup of your current Roon database
  • Exit out of Roon
  • Navigate to your Roon’s Database Location
  • Find the folder that says “RAATServer”
  • Rename the “RAATServer” folder to “RAATServer_old”
  • Restart the Roon App to generate a new RAATServer folder

Hey @benjamin

Roon was enabled under the local network setting as per above, but I have toggled them and restarted both PCs.

I have also taken a photo from the Mac Mini playing music when it doesn’t have an audio zone selected

Tomorrow I’ll scratch the RAATServer definition as it is almost 1am locally here in Europe now

Actually, I need to correct myself (well, I may perform that action, indeed) but after the reboot 2 new M1Max devices showed up in the audio device list. There is still the former default that causes both PCs to play simultaneously (“Ingos MacBook Pro”). What got lost for some reason previously were the M1Max devices and also the Apple TV. The M1Max settings are local to the MacBook Pro and only accessible via RAAT from the server.

This said, all configurations are equally accessible from both the Mac Mini (M2) and the MacBook Pro (M1) but only one of them cause both to play if selected on the “client” Roon copy also without audio zone configured on the server …

Best regards,
Ingo
