Hi, what's the best way to enter Classical Music in Roon? As example I'd like to be able to see "all" rachmaninoff albums either under Composer or Artist WITHOUT going to the "compositions" tab under Composer. Also, how to you remove an album, say a Pop Album, from appearing under a Composer. again, using rachmaninoff as example, under his Composer tab several albums of Pop appear there. Even if i go in and edit the track AND Album credits for that album it STILL appears under composer rachmaninoff...thanks for the help
I’ve moved your post from the Support category of the forum to Roon Software Discussion, since your question is a “how do I do this…” rather than a request for technical support.
Can you clarify a couple of things for us?
When you say
…are you saying that in the Composer browser, you are not seeing all the albums in your library with Rachmaninoff as a composer in the “Overview/From my library” section? For example:
If you don’t subscribe to a streaming service (e.g. Qobuz or Tidal) then you won’t see the discography tab, because this will display all albums associated with the composer or artist, whether you have them in your library or not; i.e. it is a full discography, not just the contents of your library.
Can you clarify whether you have subscribed to a streaming service? Thanks.
Hi, No streaming service. But to me it seems like this should be basic. Clearly there is something in the 7 albums that DO appear under Rachmaninoff that i can set in “Album Edit” to get the 5 that DON’T appear to show up…i guess my question would be what “edit” within Album determines this? Thanks!
as an aside…i have 3600 albums in the library, mostly rock/pop etc and Jazz. I’m just now trying to organize the few hundred classical i have…without much luck so far. This library came from Jriver starting 15 years ago or so.
I have approximately 40 albums under the Overview section of the Sergei Rachmaninoff page, and spot checking about 10 or so it appears that Rachmaninoff is a listed composer in the Credits Section under the album editor. While most of thee albums are classical, i do have a few that are pop (Sinatra’s Where Are You?) and rock (Dylan’s Shadows in the Night)., and in both those cases Rach appears as a credited composer in the album editor and also on the individual tracks on those albums. I’m not entirely sure that listing him as a composer in the album editor interface will do the trick, but give it a try.
There’s been no mention of using a tagger (MP3 or Yate) to change or create album tags. All of my classical albums have the Composer tag filled. Perhaps you could try that on one album to see if that works for you. Good luck.
I’m going to do a redo of this library…all my classical composers are a mess. as example…JSB is listing some jethro tull, ELP, mike oldfield, george winston within the JSB Composers albums overview, with EACH Track on Aqualung thinking JSB is composer… I thought the purpose of setting “show composer credits” to Less alleviated this issue. Anyway, does anyone have any “Import” settings to change from the Default that might help Classical setup better? Thanks for your help!
It sounds to me as though you should go back to looking at the file metadata, and use a third-party metadata editor rather than battling with Roon’s editors (which only affect the Roon database - they never change file metadata).
Apperently, Sergei Rachmaninov is assigned as performer or primary artist with these albums (at least some) which will prevent roon from showing the album under ´Composed by´. This is presumably a measure to prevent albums from being shown twice on the artist page, but as Rachmaninov is long dead and not granted a ´Main albums´ or ´Appearances´ category, these albums are hidden.
Solution: Edit the credits of the affected albums, remove Rachmaninov from all entries as performer, editor, primary artist or album artist. Have done it numerous times. That can be done with a file tagger if the erroneous credits are originating from file tags, or in roon´s album edit option.
To identify all these albums, you might want to see album overview and select Rachmaninov in the Focus Filter section as performer.
You can run SongKong over your library and it should fix at least 80% in one go, and it has an inbuilt config especially for roon. If you want to give it a go you can run in preview mode for free and it will create a report showing exactly what has been identified and what metadata is added, im happy to review the results with you to see if it works for you.
Do you have a [Composer] Tag, if not it is simple to add a custom tag in JRiver , make sure you check write to file in the dialog . Avoid at ALL costs having the Composer in [Artist] or [AlbumArtist]
Use the base name eg Beethoven with no fancy bits and Roon will recognize it.
JRiver will do all the tag manipulation you need, I have been managing my Classical library in JRMC for 15 yrs or more.
Hi Mike O’neill. So just for clarity…within JRiver you’re not talking about the “Composer” line item under the “Composer” Tab, correct? You’re talking about creating a custom Tag called “Composer” and having that right to the file…
So, still have the one nagging issue. how to remove an Album from a Composers Overview when ALL Tracks have, through “Edit” removed reference to the Composer of that Track AND through Album “Edit” the Composer is removed as well. After doing this, and restarting Roon, the Album is still listed under the Composer
