Issues with DSD512 Upsampling After Latest Roon Software Upgrade (ref#A73EP1)

What best describes your playback issue?

· I hear distortion or noise when I'm playing music

Is there a specific error message you see? If so, please select from the following options:

· Other

Please try to reboot your Roon Server and check to see if this helps.

· Rebooting my Server had no effect, the issue remains

Are you having an issue with a single Zone or multiple Zones?

· I'm having playback problems with all my Zones.

Does the issue still occur with all Digital Signal Processing (DSP) disabled in MUSE?

· Removing DSP has no effect. I'm still having the same problem.

Does the issue happen with local library music, streaming service music, or both?

· I have playback problems with both local and streaming service music.

Do you encounter any playback errors with the "System Output" Zone?

· The System Output has the same problem as my other Zone.

Do you have a complex network setup?

· Both the device and RoonServer are connecting to a *single router*

Please try rebooting your router.

· No, I'm still having trouble

What are the make and model of the affected audio device(s) and the connection type?

· Latest Roon software upgrade has caused the problem. Everything working fine until upgrade..

Describe the issue

Latest Roon software upgrade has broken DSD512 upsampling

Describe your network setup

Single router + Roon Rock Nuc build 261 (server build 1442) + QNAP NAS all connected via CAT5 and Fibre

My config has been working quite happily upsampling to DSD512 in Roon until yesterday when Roon decided to install a software upgrade. Now DSD512 conversion stutters but DSD256 is fine. I cannot tell if the hardware is busy re-indexing etc. but I am now tempted to reinstall Rock and rollback. Should I be seeing this with every Roon software upgrade or should it work seamlessly? Previous build was 258.

Here is my current signal path which I think should be fine @ 2.1:

Hi @Henry_Laszczewski,

Thanks for taking the time to share your report, and I’m sorry you’re running into playback issues with your DSD512 files.

If possible, could you please reproduce the issue, and share the name of the track you’ve played? With that, we’ll want to review a set of Roon Server logs from your machine, if you could use the directions found here and send over a set of logs to our File Uploader, that would be helpful!

We’ll be on standby for your reply, thank you!

I have uploaded the Roon and RAAT server log files. The issue occurs on every track that I try to upsample to DSD512. There was no problem until the new software update completed installation.

Hello @Henry_Laszczewski ,

Do you by any chance have this setting turned off? Is there any change in behavior if you try to turn it on?

Makes no difference if I switch it on. Switching back to DSD256 clears the stuttering. The NUC I am using should comfortably upsample to DSD512 and it did that before the update.

I am tempted now to re-install Roon with the package I originally downloaded and check that works. And then block any future updates if that is possible.

Did you find anything in the log files?

You can set your server and any client to “Ask before downloading any updates”, to which you would then reply NO when the reminder pops up each time you open the system.

I have reverted back to Roon OS build 258 version 2.0 build 1234. It now won’t let me connect without applying the software update which gets me back to square one - a broken version of Roon. How can I get to Roon admin without applying the software update? Looks like Roon won’t allow downgrading and will insist that the update is applied even though the update is breaking my configuration.

Do you turn on EQ your endpoint? If you did, turn it off.

My endpoint has Roon turned off and it has made no difference. Roon insists that the software update must be applied before I can connect to the server.

I mean your streamer any EQ on? When I upsampling to DSD I have the same problem when I turn off EQ the problem solved.

EQ is off at the streamer end. I have turned off Roon at the streamer end anyway. No difference. I cannot connect using the client without applying the latest update. I have also done a database and settings reset at the home page but that should not make any difference with a clean install.

Yes it does as all your remotes will be on the latest version. You would need to have the older installer for the previous version of Roon. There is no roll back facility for Roon software. So if you installed an older version of ROCK installer it will need to update to connect to the Roon app as that will be a later version. You would need an older installer for Roon app on your devices which you can’t get once an update has gone live.

Ok. So you are stuck with what is IMHO, a broken version of Roon. Unless there is an older version of the client somewhere.

Unfortunately so they offer no way to roll back on any release.

I decided to use Roon because it was possible to up-sample. And now it doesn’t work. Unless there’s a quick fix I won’t be renewing my license. It also suggests to me that they rely on the users for testing but in this case there is no safety net and no way back when an undocumented feature appears.

I have now re-applied the update. But now it is asking me to login again. When I do this it then says that I am already logged in and I need to activate and pay for another subscription??? How do I login again??? Do I need to un-authorise?

Henry you can unauthorise the old server login on that screen and then you can log in again and continue to use Roon

Thank you. I have re-authorised and re-connected everything. It’s not clear what this means so without knowing I didn’t proceed.

Yes it is a common complaint from user’s that see it and immediately become scared of the wording.
