Issues with Roon remote connectivity and functionality after update (ref#PPHQW3)

Full form submission

What’s happening?

· I'm having trouble playing music

What best describes your playback issue?

· Music stops playing mid-track

Describe the issue

Roon remote on windows 11 and android slow to connect, frequent "waiting for your roon server" messages, pulsing roon logo while playing music, songs stopping, skipping through queue, etc. Basically unusable. Started with latest update. Server is windows 10. Reinstalled roon, same result. Wired 1gb ethernet for server and windows remote.

Describe your network setup

Wired ethernet for server and windows remote. Wifi for android remote.

Uninstalled roon on server, reinstalled, seems to be working now.

Oops, spoke too soon. Worked fine, snappy response, etc. for a few minutes. Played about five songs, then stopped, showing pulsing icon, resumed, skipped several songs in queue, multiple waiting for server messages, more pulsing icon, etc.

Hi @SKBubba ,

Thanks for the report. Can you please let us know what Roon remote you saw the issue on in your last message? We’ll enable diagnostics to see if we can uncover any more clues.

Both Windows 11 and Android. Thanks.

Hi @SKBubba,

I would also make sure that your Roon Server machine is only running under a single local IP within your network. Please test out disabling any additional subnets and let me know how things function. :+1:

Single IP, no other subnets.

Hi @SKBubba,

Thanks for the follow-up. To confirm, do you only have one version of Roon, Roon 2.0 installed on the Windows device you’re using as your Roon Server?

Are you running any VPNs on the Windows device as well? If so, you’ll need to disable it when using Roon.

No, don’t have any vpns. Pretty simple network setup. Do have a virtualbox running home assistant. Haven’t had any issues until recently.

New info. I’m now able to connect to the server from two win11 remotes and android. But, it says “no audio devices found” on all remotes and the server. So no possibility to play music using roon.

Hi @SKBubba,

Thanks for the additional information. We were able to review a fresh diagnostic report from your Windows device, and saw additional traces of Roon legacy:

Info: Starting Roon v1.7 (build 571) stable on windows

Are you running both Roon 1.7 and Roon 2.0 on the same device? This could be causing you issues.

We also did see that Roon is picking up the VirtualBox:

Trace: [ipaddresses] FOUND VirtualBox Host-Only Network

As long as Roon isn’t running inside the VM, it shouldn’t be an issue. But for troubleshooting purposes, could you temporarily disable the VM and see if you’re able to get things running smoothly?

Thanks!

I did have an older full version on the server. Then I installed just the server. With the recent problem I installed the full version which now includes the server to make sure I had the latest server.

Hi @SKBubba,

Got it. To confirm, have you now removed the older legacy version? You should be able to:

  1. open your File Explorer and enable the option to show hidden files & folders.
  2. navigate to C:\Users\AppData\Local (or the equivalent on your computer)
  3. delete any Roon legacy folders

Hello,

I did not find a c:\users\appdata\local folder

I did find a C:\Users[username]\AppData\Local folder

In it I see the following roon looking sub-folders:

RAATServer
Roon
RoonGoer
RoonServer

In control panel programs and features, the only roon entry is Roon by Roon Labs LLC installed on 5/3/2024 version 2.0 (build 1407).

A post was merged into an existing topic: IPv6 failing for Roon ARC test with ETIMEDOUT error (ref#QJTQ4I)

Hi @SKBubba,

Thanks for the follow-up. Were you also able to test out my other suggestion:

Let me know, thanks!

Ok, disabled virtual machine, stopped roon server, relaunched, same behavior.

Hi @SKBubba,

Just to be safe, let’s remove all traces of Roon (outside of your backups) on your Windows device and perform a fresh install.

After you uninstalled Roon, can you also navigate to C:\Users\[yourusername]\AppData\Local and delete all Roon folders:

RAATServer
Roon
RoonGoer
RoonServer

Then head to our downloads page and perform a fresh install: Roon - Downloads

Works now. Uninstalled, removed folders, did fresh install of build 1413, restored library. Been playing now for about three hours straight with no issues. Thanks!
