When a group name is written in English, the definite article “The” is omitted for sorting purposes; consequently, “The Beach Boys” and “The Beatles” appear under “B.”
However, when a group name is written in Japanese, the definite article “ザ” is not omitted during sorting, so the name appears under “サ.”
Is this the intended behavior for Japanese-language entries?
Incidentally, on Spotify, “The Beach Boys” is displayed using Japanese characters, yet it is sorted under “B.”

The short answer is that this is not a decision about Japanese. Roon ignores exactly one word when sorting: the English “The”. Nothing else is set aside in any language, and that includes English itself. “A Tribe Called Quest” sorts under A, “Los Lobos” under L, “Die Toten Hosen” under D. The katakana ザ is treated the same way they are, which is why the name lands under サ.
So it is consistent, but it is also narrower than what you would reasonably expect, and Spotify sorting the same group under B is a fair comparison. Since this is not a current feature of Roon, I would recommend also posting your suggestion in the Feature Suggestions section of the site.
