Description of Issue
I continue to lose connection to the core on all devices. When I check the core Roon server is still running. The core is attached to a TV via HDMI and I use both Roon server and Roon on it. It occurs even if I am only using Roon sever though. I have settings so it doesn’t go to standby and I also am running amphetamine to keep things running. Once I close Roon server and then restart it everything works great until it doesn’t again. It occurs several times a day and is maddening. I really love Roon but I can’t continue to fiddle with it. Please help.
Am I reading correctly that your core is using wifi?
One of the tools we have in our diagnostics is to see what internal IP addresses are since we have to communicate with all of them and I am seeing something odd. It looks like the core is connecting to an Xfinity wireless gateway as well as Eero. Do you also have the Xfinity wireless gateway in your setup? I’m seeing addresses that indicate it very well may be.
HI. Thanks for looking into it. My core may be connected to wifi (it would be connected to the Eero-based mesh network) but it is definitely connected via ethernet to the eero network. When I check the wifi network my MBP core is connected to it says my eero network. I still get drops if I turn off wifi on the core MBP. I do have Xfinity as my ISP but I don’t think I have a wireless gateway. My current setup is cable from xfinity–>my Motorola modem (this is mine not Xfinity’s–>eero unit. My core is connted to this same eero unit via ethernet.
One thing to keep in mind is that even in a mesh network, the node you’re connecting is still wireless. A Roon core should always be wired. That said, please see below.
When we look at diagnostic logging for users we’ll always see failures. Since Roon is up and running it’s always sending hello messages to devices that might not even be in the home but your logging has a lot of them. Because of that, can you try and get me a date/time/track being played instance for me to research? Even smaller logs are over 2k lines long and it will help me immensely. Perhaps I can track down an issue that isn’t apparent.
Thanks. Sorry, I don’t understand. there
Is an Ethernet cable from the modem to the eero main unit and then to the core (mbp). Is there a better way to set it up?
When you say a date/time/song, do you mean a time stamp when the connection is lost? That’s not really what is happening. It never fails when I’m using it. It will work awesome for 4-5 days and then one morning or evening after I haven’t used it for a while I will try to start roon on any of my units (iPhone, other MacBook connected to tv, etc) and it won’t be able to find the core. When I check the core it is still running roon server. I quit roon server, restart and then it works great for a few days before I have to start the process again. In the settings on the core to not sleep and I even run the amphetamine app to doubly keep it from sleeping.
I will say that I used it last night and then woke up this morning and it had dropped the connection so something happened through the night. Could the eero be sleeping or something and dropping it’s connection to the wired core?
It was my understanding that the core was wired to an Eero wireless mesh node. If that isn’t the case, please disregard.
In looking at the logs, I see two networks still and Roon is having trouble doing its thing. The two networks are 192.168.4.x and 192.168.7.x. Your core shows to be 192.168.7.148 (but also 192.168.4.50) with other devices like the WiiM having a 192.168.4.x address. I’m not real familiar with Eero so I have no explanation as to why your wired and wireless devices have different subnets.
I have bad news too. I see there is some database corruption. Not sure how far back the problem goes or how far back your backups go but it might be wise to restore your oldest one to see if the issues go away. Here’s the error for reference.
02/13 07:17:32 Critical: broo/imagecache: LevelDb.Exception: IO error: lock /Users/jzwerner/Library/RoonServer/Cache/httpcache_2.db/LOCK: Resource temporarily unavailable
at LevelDb.Database._CheckError(IntPtr err)
at LevelDb.Database..ctor(String path)
Please restore an older backup and let me know how things go. I would also be curious as to what your thoughts are on the networking situation.
That is super weird. I only have the one Motorola modem and the eero mesh router. Should that show up on the MacBook as a network its connecting to? Is there a way to find that connection and remove it from the network? It would have to be connecting to a neighbor’s gateway or something. If I turn off wifi on the core and just run through the LAN shouldn’t that eliminate the xfinity gateway as an issue?
I am not sure I understand what’s happening on your side. If you have a Moto modem and Eero, I shouldn’t be seeing two IP schemes but I do. This is something visible to me in diagnostics from the onset of our communication to my review of the diagnostics today.
You may very well be connecting to someone else’s network. I highly recommend not using multiple network interfaces for your core so turning off wifi is definitely recommended. As of 15 minutes ago, your core had two IP addresses.
