I have stumbled across a pair of fairly good condition Kef SP1004 speakers.
I’m after opinions of what they were like from new.
I’ve not been able to test them, but thinking £150 might be worth a punt.
Image for ref, not the actual ones.
Darn it: one of the bass drivers is blown. I can feel the coil scraping.
Edit, drives seem ok
Edit, nope it’s a bad

Hope, your samples‘ tweeters don’t look like those in the photo
I actually have two of those B139 bass drivers in excellent electrical condition stored away in my basement …

Hi @Marin_Weigel
No, they look like a SP1081.
Although a replacement driver is possible, I’ve decided to skip this opportunity for today. If they are there at the end of this week, then I might explore things again.
I may be asking you for a cost for those bass drivers

SP1081 is the tweeters‘ number, no?
I think my bass drivers are SP1044, but not home for another week to check on them.

Well, good news. Drivers seem ok. Tested all with a multimeter and checked against reference material online. Between each speakers, all connected and via the crossover, I have a 0.8 Ohm difference. I’ll monitor this.
Against the side unit housing my amps etc, they’re quite imposing

Menzies:
Kef SP1004 speakers
I think they would look better moved a couple inches away from the cabinet.

I agree, just temporary placement while I do some restoration work to them, but likelihood is they’ll only move away another 4" - 6"

Wrote too soon.
Dodgy bass driver as I suspected. Flipped both and it’s helping. New drivers required.
Sounding really good though if not pushed.
Contacted Kef for a pointer in obtaining new spares.
In research mode regarding these speakers origins

News: Falcon Acoustics who make current versions of the B139 drivers, aka sp1044 do not make the original 6171 model.
Therefore you have to buy the sp1044 with an adaptor kit.
Currently out of stock until November.

Oh no!
@Menzies paces the room, casting side glances at the KEFs, working on a series of rhetorical strategies.
'Honey, I understand. But it’s not about superficial beauty. Wait ‘til you hear them; their inner beauty will shine through. You’ll see.’

‘Honey, I understand your dislike to these large, great sounding speakers, but the £600 needed to replace both bass drivers will be really worth it’

Oh no, NEVER give specific amounts. Always use vague monetary references that are frequently employed by the wife.
Go with things like, ‘They were such a great deal I just couldn’t pass them up…’
