I don’t think you can do anything about it. You’ll need volume control on your amplifier if using RCA.
@Nick_J could try Roon’s DSP volume as well, but I’m not a fan as this seems to double the CPU utilization on my little Raspberry Pi endpoints. All of the dithering and calculations happen on the endpoint instead of on core to reduce latency.
I’ve had some luck using “Headroom Management” as a crude volume control as well and tend to prefer that in cases like this. Same result, but the calculations happen on Core instead.
Been watching and reading some excellent reviews of this amp. Could be an excellent combo
Yeah, I guess we are reading the same. And it’s cheaper than the Tone2 Pro, haha. I’m tempted to try it.
If I was buying again, I would be too.
I have already bought way too much stuff in lockdown. This would be a. Excellent little system with a pi to drive it at such a low cost
Yeah, the only thing holding me back is that I really don’t need it. But curiosity sometimes overrules that.
Yes that I understand, I currently have three spare Pi’s built over lockdown for music projects, two with hat’s, and it was great fun.
I have two spare headphone Dac/amps bought as I was moving up market. When I get a chance I will set them up in other places and also have some people to donate some gear too as people start going out again.
What settings do i need to use to get optimal playback with Khadas T2Pro in Roon? Using iems
With the old v1.0 firmware, I recommended having Roon resample PCM to 176.4/192 kHz and using DSP to invert phase. With the new MCU and v1.2 XMOS firmware, this is no longer necessary. The settings I’m using should be optimal for most folks.
Hmm. Why cant i get force max volume at playback start?
What do you upscale to now?
As far as I can tell, there’s no benefit to upsampling if you have the v1.2 firmware loaded. The DAC does oversampling internally. If you decide to upsample anyway, go into Roon’s Headroom Management DSP and add two or three dB of attenuation to avoid clipping on intersample peaks.
This may be a feature that’s specific to Linux endpoints. Not sure.
Your settings look fine. In my testing (both objective and listening), there’s no benefit to upsampling, but upsampling can lead to instability and high load on your Core. Feel free to run your own experiments or just enjoy allowing the Tone2 Pro to do its job with native rates.
Thanks! I was thinking about to upscale streaming to DSD, but idk if there are any benefit to it. Seem like alot of people use HQplayer. Whats the point using that? Is the audible difference noticably better?
Does the Khadas Tone 2Pro upscale by itself? I have only used LG V40 etc, not pc /Roon before last month🙈
If you have an old non-oversampling DAC, there’s some benefit to upsampling. Not much benefit for modern DACs
Edit: my Gustard X16 DAC has a “NOS” mode that is intended to be used with media player upsampling, like HQPlayer. It may be interesting to compare, but I’m content with internal oversampling.
So, I didn’t go for that S.M.S.L amp and the Khadas balanced cables. Instead I got a lucky find, the combination is great and the quick setup here is:
Khadas Tone2 Pro + Allo Nirvana PSU
iPhone 11 + camera adapter/Audioquest usb C/A
Ultrasone Signature Pro
You happy with that solution as I am guessing more portable?
Does it work as well audio wise? though I know they tend to look a bit dongle heavy.
