Context:
My PC is coming up for ten years old. I’ve had issues with it and Roon before that led to the loss of my library, and me needing to rebuild twice. On further checking, a hardware issue with one of the two 16gb ram modules was identified and fixed. The PC has operated reasonably well since, slow but stable.

At the end of January this year, the Roon backups stopped working. The reason given was not being able to find Roon server. From the moment I discovered the issue, I decided it was time to purchase new hardware, most likely a nucleus one.

However, before I could make this happen I needed to complete a transfer of legacy iTunes music into Roon and then move the local files that I want to transfer onto the new device into a new file structure (the same as I use in Roon for Tidal tracks) in preparation for setting up the new device. The transfer is complete but I have only just started moving the iTunes files that I want to keep into the new file structure.

I have been aware I was running out of time but it seems this is now what has happened.

I have little expectation of being able to restore the current library so that it can be transferred. Since the date of the last successful backup I have andded around 2-3k tracks. I am just hoping the last backup is not corrupted.

The last thing I was doing before this crash was making sure the library files I want transfer from iTunes onto a new Roon device correlate with my current Roon library.

Obviously it doesn’t!

It’s not terrible, but there are differences and being a bit of a geek about things like this, I’ve been manually going through the playlists to find the differences and fix any missing tracks etc.

What I want to know is:

A) can my current Roon library be salvaged so that the data added after the last backup in Jan is not lost?

B) if not, can your super smart engineers extract a csv file of the full library including tag data?

C) any other miracle cure/temporary fix you can think of that might help.

Thanks
Nathan

The main issue I have with reinstalling Roon software is my backups stopped working in January. I wasn’t aware of this straight away and so carried on using Roon, saving more and more files to my Library.

I can find most of this music. It’s either in the most recent albums in Tidal or it’s in my iTunes library.

Im not expecting a fix, I’m just hoping to get the most recent library data.

Please see my more detailed update for context.

Hi @Nathan_Fowler ,

There is no way to extract current pieces of the database and apply them to a new one. But what you can try to do is to reboot the Roon Server and then you may be able to tempoarily see the previous database. It won’t be very stable, and if you try to run a backup it will most likley display the corrupt message again, but it may be useful to see the new contents and then do an export / take screenshots of new info you’ve added since then, and restore the old backup and manually edit/add items.

How do you do this?

On a windows machine running windows 10, do you mean: click the show hidden icons in the taskbar in the corner by the clock, right click Roon and quit, then restart?

If so I have tried this.

Hi @Nathan_Fowler ,

Yes, quitting Roon Server from the taskbar and restarting it sometimes allowed the library to load. If it’s still not loading, then I’m afraid the corruption is too great to even get Roon started and you will need to use a backup.

Yes m, I’ve done that so I think it’s probably terminal. Thankfully, I have a mirror image of my playlists in Tidal and iTunes, and hopefully the roon backup from January will be okay. I was also waiting to complete the transfer from iTunes to Tidal, before buying a new system. I have just done this so it’s not that bad really.

I’m hoping the nucleus one will be faster, more stable, and less maintenance.

Thanks for your understanding @Nathan_Fowler , and I do hope that the backup you have from January works as expected and that you are able to rebuild the playlists. Since there’s not much more we can offer from a support standpoint on this, I’ll go ahead and mark the case for closure, thank you.
