Description of Issue

I have two Roons in two homes. They worked flawlessly until I installed the newest Linksys Velop MX6200 in my home. Now any time I play the ROON (Tidal, live radio, my hard drive) it restarts and “reconnects” - sometimes it just shuts off. I talked to Linksys support and they think it might be an issue with their new Tri-Band WiFi, which has 6 GHz band. Regular 2.4, 5 and now a 6 GHz. They think it may affect the ROON. Note: When I stream from my Lumin T3, which is controlled via WiFi it does not restart, sputter or shut off.

See if you can use a normal primary router such as TP-Link or Asus, then turn the Linksys to Bridge mode.

If that still does not work, return the Linksys if you can.

Peter, I have a Tri Band VELOP at my other home - 1 2.4, 2x5GHz. Lumin and all other systems work perfectly on the MX6200. I used the Roon with a primary router from my provide - same result. My Lumin streams all day. This response is too simplistic and unfair. More of these Linksys are coming. What else can you offer other tha to return a product? If other connects failed, OK, I would return. Only ROON doesn’t work.

You may also search for Velop here and see what others experienced before.

You can have support look at logs and analyze them for you, but if there is a conclusion different than network infrastructure issue after weeks of diagnosis, I’d be surprised.

@Michael_McNeely, how is your WiFi configured, are each of the bands using a different SSID? I use a triband (1x2.4, 2x5) ASUS router in a mesh configuration but have separate SSIDs for each band so I can control with more refinement what device is used to connect to each band.

If possible, can you force the Roon devices using WiFi to use either of the 5GHz bands?

I had Velop mesh (4 nodes) and from day 1 experienced continual problems. Nodes would go offline, not “talk” to each other, drop into setup mode, or just not work, etc. etc. I spent many hours talking to Linksys support, reconfiguring & resetting nodes for over around year & eventually I gave up and sold Velop at a considerable loss.
I now use a standard broadband router without problems other than one or two areas in the house with low wifi signal strength…

Hello and thanks to all that are responding. Robert, I split the bands this morning - still same dropping issue with Roon on the dedicated 5 GHz channel. For all, I also have new Fiber optic 1GB service. This is my 4th Velop system. I know how to work them and they work well in my circumstance. I live in a four story barn, so I need the mesh system and extended WiFi. I have returned to the Lumin app on my Lumin T3 - works flawlessly with no drops. I am going to continue to troubleshoot with Linksys. I thought Roon and friends might have advice on how to troubleshoot this issue. As of now, I cannot use my Roon Nucleus here and that is a shame. For reference, the same Tri-band concept works at my other home - it just doesn’t have the newest 6 GHz band in the mix. Grateful for any helpful responses that allow me to keep my Velop and enjoy the ROON.

Assuming you’re not working in bridge mode, Is your Nucleus hardwired to the Master Node or one of the satellites? If the later you should try connecting directly to the master, Roon recommend that the core is connected to the router by ethernet cable to avoid connectivity problems.
Linksys support are very good, as you know, and will spend as much time as is needed to try to resolve problems but in my case “enough was enough.” After many months I couldn’t bear to waste more hours investigating without the prospect of a resolution.

Thank you Pixel. My roon is directly connected to the ethernet cable to the parent node, which is functioning as the router. This seems to be an issue with the Roon app and the WiFi. But, the signal also drops when I implement the Roon app from a hardwired/ethernet connected Mac desktop. This all started with the MX6200. I would be more receptive to Linksys problems if my other streaming apps (Lumin works fine) were malfunctioning. The MX6200 is brand new and they have elevated support - which likely means it has bugs and vendors haven’t upgraded their software either. I prefer the Roon, for sure to any other app.

One item to note on the MX6200 is that while it is triband, one of the bands is 6 GHz (known as WiFi 6E, and also supported more fully in WiFi 7 when it is released later this year). The Air and most current WiFi devices do not support the 6 GHz band (it may be used primarily for communicating between each Velop node), and 6 GHz has less range than the 5 GHz band.

Your setup most likely connects only with the 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz bands (definitely the Mac Air uses only these bands). I am wondering if an older Velop system you had used 1x2.4 and 2x5 GHz bands, giving more options to connect your devices.

Thank you Robert. I agree it COULD be a problem, but I split the bands and logged into the 5 GHz band. Still dropped. I used ROON on my ethernet desktop (no WiFi) connection. Still dropped.

Hi @Michael_McNeely,

My understanding, from reading the technical specs of the MX6200 is that the router only has two ports (WAN and LAN).

Do you have the router’s LAN port connected to a switch and then both the Nucleus and the desktop plugged into that switch?

If there is a switch what make and model is it?

If not how is the Nucleus and the desktop connected to the LAN?

Thanks Carl. The Roon is dropping via WiFi and Ethernet. For the ethernet connection, I have fiber to my Linksys MX6200. Ethernet out of MX to first switch for whole house, which is Netgear ProSafe GS110. Out of wall in living room, ethernet goes to a switch (NetGear ProSafe 108) and one wire goes to the Roon. My Lumin is wired from the child node to Lumin so I can use the Lumin app. Currently, everything in our household works, except Roon, which keeps restarting. I am working with high level Linksys tech support also, so if you have suggestions about WAN/LAN or other, let me know. While we speak, the Roon is going in and out via ethernet. It is playing a song now, but the app is closed.

I am wondering if your two switches may be an issue. I cannot tell by how you named them, but it seems the GS110 may be a managed switch, which Roon does not recommend using due to the many configuration parameters that may interfere with Roon’s RAAT protocol. I cannot tell with certainty if the 108 is managed or unmanaged, but it appears to be an unmanaged switch.

Is it possible to replace the GS110 with an unmanaged switch and see if that has any impact?

I’ve tried to solve enough of these cases without success to conclude there is a very significant chance that the multicast with this brand may not work in the scenarios we need it to, i.e. to forward all multicast to all hosts without dropping any of them - this is the exact same reason why unmanaged switches are preferable to managed switches, because the latter type has the possibility to be too smart to drop multicast packets Roon actually requires unless they are configured properly.

Bridge mode has a much better chance of working, as reflected in another solved case here. The same is true for Eero. If bridge mode works, it proves the multicast behavior does not meet Roon requirements.

I appreciate all of the suggestions and support. I got rid of the Linksys - many of you were right and my stubbornness just didn’t win! I am using the Calix modem/router/WiFi Calix GigaSpire BLAST, Model u6.1 GS4220E that came from my provider. I have great WiFi and speeds. Last night I left the Roon on and it was still running in the morning. That is a great sign! I do, however, still have an issue. When I use my laptop (MacBook Air. M2, 2022, Ventura 13.4.1 OS) Roon stops playing the music and sometimes logs out completely. I was using my iPhone last night (iPhone 14, iOS 16.6) the Roon ran all night and into the morning. I plan on keeping the system connected to the Calix, but what can I do about this periodic stopping from my laptop, which is my daily use system?

When one of these stops happens, can you try to connect to Roon with your iPhone and check its state? Reason I’m asking is that I use a Macbook often as a Roon remote and occasionally an accidental wrong key press causes Roon to misbehave while in the background from other apps.

There are a few keyboard shortcuts that could cause problems if roon is running in the background…

Have you another device you can use to prove the source of the problem?

There were reports here suggesting to use this app for this type of Mac OS issue:

I want to thank of you for your support, ideas, guidance. I also want this to help others. After two days of working with my local fiber technician we now have the system working flawlessly, including the ROON. There were two keys in this order: 1) tech changed router and updated to multiple device firmware (I have over 60 devices); 2) I need a Verizon network extender due to our rural address. When it works, we have a full Verizon signal. On a whim, I told him I was going to press the reset button on this extender. Voila! The system started humming. I have been trying to create any disturbance in the system - none. I did return the Linksys and now use the rental modem. For me, even though I have some tech understanding, having the Fiber company with the ability to troubleshoot from afar and come onsite is critical. In addition, they can’t blame other products. So, a hearty thank you to all!
