Logitech mx keys keyboard's media keys aren't working globally with Roon

Core Machine (Operating system/System info/Roon build number)

win10 pro with latest roon build

Description Of Issue

Just got a new keyboard, the logitech MX Keys keyboard, and the media keys; play/pause, previous, and next keys aren’t working globally in roon. They will work if roon has focus but not if roon is out of focus.

Is there any way to get this functioning?

My old keyboard, corsair k70 rgb, which also has media keys (though they are dedicated keys not re-used function keys), works just fine. I would hate to have to take this keyboard back for this reason as it seems like the most popular keyboard brand should have better support in Roon. Hopefully this can be figured out.

Thanks for any help with this problem and let me know if you need any other information.

Hi @daedalusman.

Have you ensured that you are pressing the function key before pressing the media command?

Can you please confirm if the function media keys from the new keyboard work properly in other apps (such as Chrome or VLC)?

Thanks for the reply.

I’ve had a chance to check some different apps.
VLC doesn’t recognize the media keys at all neither does chrome. The Spotify and Tidal apps on windows work with or without the program having focus.

Hi @daedalusman,

Thanks for checking the other apps. When this behavior occurs on Roon do you have Spotify/TIDAL open in the background as well? Do the commands by any chance get router to Spotify/TIDAL instead of Roon? If you have no other apps open except for Roon in the background, does the same behavior occur?

Usually the only other app I have open is Firefox. But even with that closed and Roon being the only app open if the window doesn’t have focus the media keys wont work.

Hi @daedalusman,

Let’s run a test here:

  1. Try using the media keys with Roon open on the foreground and note the exact local time + date you use the keys

  2. Try using the media keys with Roon open in the background and note the exact local time + date you use the keys

Once I have this info I can enable diagnostics and check to see if the commands are appearing at all in the logs. Thanks!

I have the same keyboard and exactly the same problem. What is worse, it that it started working for a period of time… and now isn’t working again (and I have no clue what I changed).

In the last minute I tried both of those scenarios, although do you need to enable diagnostic logs first? (10:37 AEDT).

Hi Nick (@ascl),

Thanks for that timestamp and for letting me know you have the same issue.

I took a look at our diagnostics servers for your account and unfortunately I’m not seeing your Core communicating with our diagnostics servers.

Can I please request that you send me a manual copy of your Core logs by using these instructions? The best way to get them over would be via Dropbox / Google Drive but if you don’t have either just let me know and I can provide alternate upload instructions.

Thanks!

I don’t use dropbox or google drive, can you please provide an alternative method? SFTP or something is fine. Thanks!

@ascl - Just send the info via private message.

Logs sent.

FWIW I don’t think this is a roon specific issue. iTunes behaves the same way, and I have created a support ticket with logitech, but I am not holding my breath on that one :frowning:

Hmm, it DOES work for Media Player.

Okay I have a solution, and think I understand what is going on here… and why it worked for a period of time and stopped. Basically, Logitech’s software is rubbish. It swallows the media keys, and only passes them on to particular programs, and do not provide a way to configure this. There are numerous solutions on the web for their old software, not for the latest one: https://superuser.com/questions/338108/how-do-i-get-my-logitech-media-buttons-to-control-spotify/888413

The interim solution? uninstall logioptions. Now media keys work as I would expect. So this is only partially a roon specific issue.

This unfortunately means I lose various other mouse/keyboard options, but media keys are pretty useful…

Hi Nick (@ascl),

Thanks for the update here! Since this issue appears to be related to the Logitech software and it’s inability to pass media keys properly onto Roon, uninstalling logioptions seems to be the best bet here. You could also try reaching out to Logitech support to let them know of this behavior.

I am in contact with logitech support, although I am not hopefull. It might be useful for the Roon team to reach out to them and see if you can get Roon registered as a ‘supported’ music player, more people that speak up the better I guess.
