Lost connection to external hard drive

I have a Western Digital external hard drive (NTFS) connected to my Nucleus. I removed it today to add more music files (correct format) and after connecting it back to the Nucleus (via USB) Roon no longer recognizes the hard drive. Why is that and what needs to be done to reconnect? [I have looked through the community and cannot find a solution.]

the device.

Did you power off the nucleus when you disconnected it?
And since reconnecting it have you rebooted the Nucleus?

Yes, I did.

What happens if you go into the edit section of the storage location that can now no longer be found?
Can you then change it to “see” the drive again?
I had this a few times on one of my USB drives myself for no good reason that I could see.

I don’t see an option to “see” the drive. I see “edit this folder” and if I click on the three vertical dots and select edit, I get to the “Choose music storage folder” and no device is displayed.

That was what I meant by see it, would it show another storage location.
Another trick I had to do was rename the drive using Windows explorer.
Is that an option?
When I did that it then showed up in Roon as a new storage location I was able to add.

The drive should be exFat as that is the recommended format. NTFS can have issues with Linux.

Also, attach the drive back on a windows PC and run a check. That should clear up any issues caused by running it with Linux.

ROCK creates it’s own name from a “number” in the drive , I assume Nucleus will too , I tried and failed it just renames it back …

@rugby has the solution, exFAT if you intend to remove it. Mine is NTFS but is never removed , I copy all content to it over the network. So it hasn’t been an issue. One day I’ll fix it

There are several posts giving the solution; for example:

Interesting…I use an Antipodes server which is Linux based and if I change the drive name in Windows Explorer it does see it as a new drive.
Ah well, learn something new today!
Hopefully the op can reformat in exfat and get going again.

I discovered it should be ex FAT just after I’d copied 3 tb to it , so I decided to suck it and see , it hasn’t been an issue for 2 yrs so far, but as I said I have never needed to disconnect it

I reformatted the external SSD to exFAT, reloaded the music file and then reconnected it to the Nucleus via USB. It is now discoverable. TY!

If I do not disconnect it, how in the future would I be able to add more music files to it?

(If relevant, I’m Windows 11 on my laptop.)

You can, but, since there is no Eject USB in RoonOS, you first turn off the RoonServer PC, then move the drive to the other PC, load music, bring it back and plug it in, and then turn the Server PC back on.

Yo

OR - there is no need to remove the drive , it will be visible on the network , this is mine in Windows Explorer.

You can see the USB drive , so you simple Drag n Drop, Copy & Paste - whatever

I keep my library on my Windows PC and use SyncBack to mirror files to the ROCK

I’m unable to see the Nucleus. How do I make is discoverable?

Windows has a habit of not seeing, or forgetting the presence of, some non-Windows devices in your network.

You have to type in the name explicitly in the address field of the Windows File Explorer.

For example: \\nucleus, \\nucleusplus, \\nucleustitan or \\nucleusone depending on which model Nucleus you have.

Alternatively, you can use the “Map Network Drive” feature of Windows to map an internal folder (e.g. the InternalStorage folder) to your Windows PC. That doesn’t seem to disappear - Windows likes that…

Perfect, \\nucleus worked. Thanks to everyone who provide guidance. This discussion can be closed now.
