Lumin T3 on the way?

The Lumin USB type A port is only used for optional USB output to an external USB DAC, or a USB storage device (for use with Lumin app, not usable in Roon). This USB port cannot be connected to a computer.

In that review it says: „I compared the sound quality of the same track via Qobuz initiated by Roon vs. using the LUMIN app, and although it’s very close in most cases, the latter seemed just a touch better. It appeared to have a richer sound with slightly more front-to-back depth – but it was close, and not a dealbreaker either way.“

Any idea why that is?

Peter, I’m intrigued by this quote:

“The T3’s analogue output stage is derived from the flagship X1, but with some cost reduction, primarily achieved by removing the expensive Lundahl output transformers which are also present on the P1.”

Is that accurate, as I seem to recall that the T2 used Lundahl output transformers?

T2 doesn’t feature these - it would add some $$ to the base price.

The only Lumin models with Lundahl output transformers are: X1 P1 S1 A1 T1

Thanks @wklie /@Hudson - don’t know where I got that idea from!

My guess as to why the Lumin App sounds somewhat better than Roon is simple – and probably wrong, but here goes: as the Lumin App is integral to the Lumin OS, it has one fewer hoop to jump through vs. using Roon. I realize I am probably way off base, but my ears tell me a different story!

Did you try Roon only mode too?
I hope @wklie can shed some light on this

I did try Roon Only mode, but still preferred the Lumin App. Others thought, however, that the Roon Only mode provided the best SQ, so perhaps it’s system dependent. I use the Lumin App, therefore, for critical listening and Roon for background music.

Roon has so many variables (settings, upsampling, filters) it is hard to give a response as to how it compares to Lumin and app only. I agree that Roon introduces new considerations including the PC running it, and the setup of that PC. That could introduce new issues. On my system, running Roon on the Nuvleus with no room correction or EQ but with upsampling and as Peter has suggested, I don’t hear any inferiority over Lumin and it’s app alone. My system is revealing of differences (Devore O/96, Leben 600x or 300b amps, Acoustic Zen Absolute copper cables).

A Hong Kong review compared T3 to T2. It said T3 is smoother, while layering and dimensionality are slightly improved.

Interestingly enough, this is the second time I receive feedback that characterizes the SQ from our 2022 processor to be “smoother” compared to the corresponding predecessors.

Terrific review! With the introduction of the P1 and reintroduction of the T-series with the T3, Lumin is firing on all cylinders!

I am very happy to see more Lumin T3 reviews, it is quite apparent that is a significant improvement versus the T2. Mine is showing up tomorrow and I am very much looking forward to it. I have been living with the Lumin D2 with SBooster MKII LPS and have been very happy with it. I already know that the T3 will blow me off my feet, as I was considering the T2 before the T3 announcement. Has anyone else purchased the T3 and upgraded to a linear power supply? If so, has it made significant improvements for you? What LPS did you choose and why?

I also had the Sbooster and D2 before moving to the T2. I’m contemplating adding another streaming player or DAC for a second system so curious about the T3. I’ve also considered a Marantz Ruby SACD/DAC coupled with a U1 Mini or similar, as I have lots of CDs and the Marantz DAC portion can accommodate DSD inputs.

I didn’t feel the need to upgrade the T2 power supply and I did hear one bad experience of a T2 owner whose Sbooster failed and impacted his T2, so I may at least wait till warranty expires.

If T3 had a digital input to enable a transport it would be a no-brainer. Otherwise I’ll consider ripping any CDs I can’t access on services.

If you don’t want to rip all those CDs, and if budget allows: K-03XD + U2 Mini.

Is this your system Peter? @wklie

I use a Lumin X1. I have no need to play CD. We encourage users to rip their CDs, but for those users who still want to play physical CD or SACD, Lumin is perfectly compatible with Esoteric players for good reasons.

Can I ask what those good reasons are Peter?

I’m still very tempted to buy a Lumin U1X/U2 Mini to feed my Esoteric K-01X/G-02 combo.

I just love the Linn KDS Organik that I use for streaming. However, the Linn comes across as slightly ‘polite’ compared to the Esoteric combo. The Esoteric just enthrals you, and literally assaults your senses. The Linn is very slightly more refined in comparison, but less bombastic.
