My U2 Mini, which I have been enjoying for over 3 years has just developed a problem where it will not output a signal to my Ferrum Wandla DAC over USB.
I have been using it in Roon Only mode, but did a factory reset, updated it from firmware 20 to the latest version of 21 using the Lumin app, checked to make sure the USB was still selected for output and power cycled it. Initially it worked, passing a signal through and I had music streaming from my Nucleus, through my Asus router and several metres of Ethernet cable to the Mini. From there it was outputting as normal to the DAC. However, if I pause the stream, I can’t restart it until I power cycle the transport again.
When looking at the Roon routing it is clear the file is being sent to the Mini, but it isn’t being sent from the Mini to the DAC. Any ideas about what might be happening and how to fix it?
Hi Peter, I followed your instructions about power cycling my network and then hooked up my coaxial cable between the Mini and the Wandla DAC and selected spif in the menu on the Lumin app. I hit play in my Roon app and, though Roon indicated it was streaming to the Mini, the front screen of the Mini and the Roon app both indicated it was not playing through to the DAC. No sound was coming from my speakers.
I paused play in Roon and power cycled the Mini. When it indicated on the front screen it was ready to play and a second later when it had shown up as a zone in Roon, I pressed play again and the music began, which was great.
I went back and shut down the Mini and disconnected the coaxial cable and reconnected the USB, selected it in the Lumin app. Again I had to power cycle the Mini before music would play. But it did play.
I then stopped the music and shut my stereo off for 15 minutes. When I powered my system up again the Mini would again not play the stream from Roon until I cycled the power once again.
It seems once the Mini goes into pause, it won’t play music again until it is power cycled regardless of which output is selected.
This is a new and unwelcome development. Any ideas for a fix?
Again thanks for your help.
I later put the Mini in #ROONONLY mode and it was unable to play the stream from the nucleus even after power cycling. This is a bit off putting as think the #ROONONLY setting sounds marginally cleaner and more spacious with my system. I may have been one of the early adopters and my U2 Mini has served faultlessly in this mode until now.
I am hoping there is a fix for this.
I am using a third party linear power supply, an SBooster, which was installed by one of Lumin’s dealers here in Canada when I purchased the U2 Mini.
I don’t have the technical ability to restore the original power supply, though it was included in my purchase.
After all these years of functioning properly, how could this manifest this issue?
Thanks for your support thus far.
I have a U2 Mini with SB Booster also. Been running without problems since I bought the U2, but now it will not play until I restart the Roon service on my Synology NAS 918+. Running in ROONONLY mode.
When I click start in the Roon app, the display in the U2 Mini shows the music number and artist selected, but just no sound.
Must be something related to an upgrade of Roon.
Stop, wait and start of Roon on the NAS will cure the problem until next time the Lumin has been offline.
Thanks Jesper, this seems to be a similar problem but not identical problem. I have power cycled my Roon Nucleus, but this does not seem to affect how the U2 Mini fails to operate in #ROONONLY mode, or even using Roon with the Lumin app active. Power cycling the Mini is the only thing that gets music flowing to my DAC, but it won’t work at all in #ROONONLY.
I’ve also tried using a different power supply, an iFi Power Elite, but the results are the same.
I have contacted the dealer who sold me the U2 Mini and performed the modification for the external power supply. He said he is working on a solution.
After factory resetting it using the rear button method:
Please try a non-Roon method of playback: Tidal Connect, Qobuz Connect, Spotify Connect. You can use a free Spotify acccount, but Tidal Qobuz require paid accounts (or free trial).
If you would like to play local music files, please setup the free MinimServer on a computer, and put you FLAC files there. In Lumin app, choose the library to be MinimServer.
My first message here, because I have the same problem with my Lumin U2 mini (+ Paul Hynes power supply); since last week, I have to reboot Roon everytime I want to listen to music.
Please disconnect USB to DAC, and try coax from Lumin to DAC. Make sure your SPDIF / coax output are enabled in Lumin app. See if it makes a difference.
Peter, So I have tried a couple of non-roon methods of playback on my U2 Mini, as you suggested. Initially I forgot to factory reset with a pin on my Mini, but both methods worked equally well without the reset and then after I had reset it and my Lumin app. I have a subscription to Qobuz so I used Qobuz connect to stream to the Mini. This worked, it sounded okay. I waited 15 minutes for the Mini to go into standby and tried again. Again Qobuz Connect worked to produce music from the Mini.
Although the technophobe in me purchased roon and a roon ready (until recently) transport for a reason, “it just works.” I also spent the afternoon installing MinimServer on my Mac and setting it up with a small library of albums. The Lumin app discovered the library and the music played.
After doing the factory reset and playing from Qobuz Connect and MiniServer, I also tried playing from roon, which also worked. I then paused the stream, turned off my DAC, waited a bit restarted the DAC, and tried to restart my roon stream. It did not work. The album art and information showed up in the roon app but it did not show up as passing from the Mini to my DAC, just as in my photo in the initial post. Although the name of the Album and track showed up on the Lumin’s screen there was no data about the sampling or bit rate, which of course was not being passed to the DAC.
I am using a roon nucleus as a server Roon Server version 2.58(build 1608)
Again thanks for your efforts, it does seem to be an issue with the roon stream, in particular passing through the transport to the outputs. Qobuz through the Lumin App, Qobuz Connect, and the MinimStream through the Lumin App all seem to be passing the signal flawlessly. Of course none of these have the functionality nor ease of use of roon.
I take it this problem is unique to U2 Minis and perhaps U2s and that the Lumin devices in the D, P, T, and X series, which have internal DACs are still producing music from Roon. Just curious.
If you could play Qobuz for a few hours, then the hardware is ok. There is a known issue with Roon Server 2.58 with certain setups, that is being investigated by Roon Labs.
Same problem here with my U2 mini. Strange phenomemenon
Roon is playing, Lumin output to Dac normal.(usb)
I stop playing music in the Roon app
In the Lumin player options, i select a different option for MQA handling, and immediately select the original MQA option again, remember no Roon playing active while I do this…
Resume playing in Roon app, LUMIN SENDS NO MORE OUTPUT TO DAC !
after restarting roon server on rock, Lumin resumes output to Dac
I have a feeling all this started after the latest RAAT SDK update on the Lumin side …
