Roon Core Machine

I am using a 16Gb ram 2020 Mac Mini

Networking Gear & Setup Details

I am Using an Orbi mesh system with the roon core hardwired to the mesh satellite

Connected Audio Devices

Connected to a NAIM unity atom which is a Roon ready device. This is also hardwired into the network

Number of Tracks in Library

I have an old Itunes Library with 200,000 songs

Description of Issue

M1 Mac mini Ram problems. I am trying to set up an M1 Mac mini with 16GB of memory as a stand alone roon core. The only program that is running on this machine is roon. Except when I use activity monotor or istat menus to measure Ram usage. The problem is Memory pressure. My activity Monitor shows that roon is using 42GB memory and the graph is in the yellow, not a good thing. My istat menus is also showing 60% memory pressure and that roon is using 42GB. What should I do, I have roon on trial, I like the program but I am very worried about the memory usage. Roon seems to be working but seems to hang if I try and restart to reduce the memory pressure. What should I do

Roon could be doing the initial audio analysis which is very intensive. I suggest setting the back ground audio analysis to OFF and On Demand analysis to FAST during your trial. That way you won’t spend a lot of the trial time doing analysis. (Can be found under Settings / Library)

Roon is trying to individually analyse every track in your library. Put the Mac somewhere cool and let it do its thing. To see its progress go to settings : storage and make sure it is actually processing tracks. I’d set it to throttled when you want to play stuff otherwise let it do it’s thing. 200,000 tracks is a lot of tracks.

Thanks for the replies. I am trying to keep track of the RAM usage. The M1 Mac mini is only being used to run Roon. I set it up over a week ago as a stand alone machine for music only. I restarted Roon, which took the Roon Ram usage back to 3.71GB. But tracking it over the past few days has seen it go from day 1 3.71Gb to day 2 5.2Gb to day 3 14.8Gb to 25.08Gb this morning. The M1 runs very cool so that is not a problem. I really like the platform, just not sure what is going on. Should I be using Roon server? If I run it as a stand alone server it is difficult to track Ram usage. The program seems to be working OK. Do I need to worry about this?

Yes, you should be running the server app with no user interface. It is much more efficient and does not seem to have any memory leaks…

Hey @Greg_McCourt,

Ben with the support team following up, thanks for your patience here!

I wanted to check in to see how things were running, and if you had made the switch over to Roon Server? Both @Rugby and @Henry_McLeod have made good points in potential causes of the high RAM usage.

Let me know how things are going, and I’ll be monitoring this thread for your reply. :+1:
