Hello, wanting a seperate computee to do HQPlayer since my pc struggles with DSD512 ASDM7EC-SUPER and similiar with Sinc-L settings. I’m away from it so I don’t remember off the top of my head. I guess an AMD R7 5700G is very underpowered if they can’t run while connected to an RTX 5080.
So I was considering the new Mac Studio with the M5 Max. Will that be able to handle those filters and settings? Heard that version 6 is lighter weight and easier to run filters so wondering if anybody has tried with a past Mac Studio. Thank you!
CUDA does become active, but its a good 15-30 seconds between songs, it does stutter but very uncommon but completely crashes anf wont play on any 48khz based files. No issue like that for 44.1khz based. I have a Holo Audio Spring 2 KTE so that shouldnt be an issue. I downsample everything in Roon to 44.1 then it works better. Still that delay though. None of those issues with 768khz upsampling.
It won’t play 48k sources with sinc-L, since the sinc-L cannot convert from 48k-base source to 44.1k-base output. sinc-long is practically same filter but allows this conversion.
Since Spring 2 can do 48k-base DSD correctly, you can enable “48k DSD” and “Adaptive rate” in settings and set output rate limit to 48k x512. This allows you to use sinc-L since it allows HQPlayer to change output rate as well.
As a side note, if you specifically want to use sinc-L style filter, I recommend using sinc-Lh instead. It is better quality and much lighter to process.
From what I remember, I did select adaptive rate and 48k DSD but I will try the long version of it and LH to see if that works. Is Version 6 easier to run in general than version 5? Thank you for the response, will try to get to it tonight and see the settings I put in and finally try version 6.
You could try with v6 to see what kind of difference it makes. v6 has some E-core allocation optimizations for M5 Pro/Max/Ultra CPUs. I recommend setting E-Cores to “filter”.
I am currently using a Mac Studio M5Max 18 core CPU, running HQP Desktop 6.1. Previously I was using a Mac Mini M4Pro 14 core CPU running HQP Desktop 6.0.
Something that I noticed is that the M4Pro had 4 Efficiency and 10 Performance cores. HQP appeared to use the Performance cores very well and the Efficiency cores less so. I was easily running poly-sinc-short-mp-2s in both positions and ASDM7EC-fast 512+fs.
In the M5Max it has what Apple calls 12 Performance cores and 6 Super cores. Running the same settings on the M5Max I’m having more dropouts and longer pauses between songs. When looking at Activity Monitor CPU History it appears that HQP is using the 6 Super cores very well but using the Performance cores much less. I’ve enabled “48k DSD” and “Adaptive rate” in settings and set output rate limit to 48k x512. I have E-Cores set to “filter”.
