Matrix Mini-I Pro 3 : Roon ready or not?

no longer arrives !!! :frowning: :frowning: :frowning: :frowning:

How many days did it take you to order it from Shenzen?

Oh dear that is not good news.
I was annoyed when I got my being delivered tomorrow notification and then it didn’t turn up because they had run out of stock.

No idea about shipment from China, it will depend if they ship to a company who ship it Europe first or if they ship it direct.
Iq have had good and bad experiences but never ordered anything of that value from China

Bummer. Shenzhen Audio sent mine in four days via DHL to Seattle. Might just be the availability of flights?

Hi, it’s Chinese New Year, that is why shipping is delayed at the moment. My delivery from China took 4 days, delivered by DHL.

Celebrations last up to 16 days, but only the first 7 days are considered a public holiday (February 11th–17th, 2021)

Cheers John

For those with the Pro 3 and headphones…

Has anybody experienced any particular headphones that suffer tonal balance / poor driver control due to the units high output impedence?

Or conversely, list your cans which you believe sound as good (or even better) on the pro 3 than other head amps you have.

I think the Ananda are fine on the SE and balanced connection on the pro 3. No degrading compared to Matrix M or ifi Zen DAC.

I have tried AKG 712Pro which were good but not great.
I am currently using HiFiman Sundara’s which require more output that many (which is why I am considering the Andanda’s). I have now set up the Sundaras convolution filter and with upscaling and headroom meant that I was running close to the limit of the volume (I think this is generally a Sundara issue).
I did notice some strange issues when using DSD, so stopped using that as there was something about the audio that was not correct and it was probably driver control

At the moment though I am very happy with the setup.
Mike

I have to crank the Ananda by a few more dB on the pro 3 compared to element M or an ifi zen dac. I run convolution filter for the Ananda. Vert happy with sound of them on the pro 3. They don’t lack anything compared to running on other sources.

Have just borrowed a pair of Dan Clark Aeon 2 Closed. They are only 13 ohm with sensitivity of 92 dB.

From what I have read on the net, planar drivers do not suffer the same as dynamic drivers with potential impedance mismatch. Some argue the rule of 8 is irrelevant to planars. I’ve seen a test plot for the Aeon 2 closed on 1 ohm v 70 ohm amp output and that confirms the situation.

Will report back when I’ve played with the DC Audio Aeon 2C on my available sources.

Cheers.

One of the reasons I was looking at the Ananda is that they are much easier to drive than the Sundara’s as well as being another step up in most areas.

I am also looking to get a pair of closed back headphones as well (multiple listening stations, don’t judge me).
For that I was looking at the Meze 99 Classics as they also do balanced with a replacement cable.
Any recommendations in the same kind of price bracket appreciated.

Mike

I can highly recommend the Ananda, I think they are a great pair of headphones in every aspect. Love my pair.

I think the closed back market in the sub 500 bracket doesn’t give many contenders from what I’ve seen. I think the meze 99 is probably one of the better headphone for build and sound quality and offers cable swapping. I’ve tried them briefly and enjoyed them. I didn’t think they were as bass heavy as some describe.

The other can which is great for under 500 is the Ollo Audio S4R. That is a very neutral pair of headphones. I think they are launching updated version soon so hard to find at moment. The closed version doesn’t have the same microphonic headband as the open version.

Other than that Beyer obviously have the 770 and 1770. I’ve owned 2 pairs of 770 in the past but always ended up moving them on due to fatigue. I liked the 1770 when I heard them, very aggressive sounding & 1000 mph or nothing - superb for EDM etc. They are wired single sided though with a 3 pin XLR so you need to mod the cup connector to go balanced.

Neumann NDH20 get good reviews for sound quality but they have a comfort issue according to many. I’ve not heard a pair so can’t comment.

Then just over the 500 mark youve got the fostex / em-u / denon family cans. Never heard any of those as nobody stocks them where I live.

Can’t think of others off the top of my head, I’m sure others can chime in.

Thanks for that, I have looked at the Beyer’s but put off that they need to be modified (from what I read) for balanced usage (like my K712 Pro which I have been using all morning in my study and are single ended)

Never heard of the Ollo Audio S4R so I will take a look. I only want the option of closed not to annoy the family, but in general I think I am an open back person (and a sharer of music obviously).

I am not in a rush, pretty much settled on the Ananda’s as my next Open back pair already

Yes, open backs for me all the way when the environment allows.

You should definitely check the Ollo out. I listened to the open and closed backs last year. I wasn’t in the market for a closed back at the time and would have happily bought the opens if the headband hadn’t been so microphinic. As stated in previous most, the closed headband doesn’t suffer that problem as its different design. I think they are a great set of cans for the money. And way more neutral than the Meze 99.

I had a look at them and they are quite stylish and interesting looking
I will keep an eye out for the updated model

Mike

I’ve compared my Beyerdynamic Amiron Homes on the office Mini to my Naim DAC V1 in the living room (being fed Roon by an opticalRendu with a Sonore Ultra LPS and opticalModule chain before it). The V1 wins for sure, but I found nothing that made me unhappy with the Matrix output, esp as it’s comparing an $899 unit with upwards of $5k in the main rig. I am going to get a 4.4mm balanced cable for the Amiron’s and try that.

Anyone have a delay or slight pause with the volume control, both physical knob and the remote? Probably the only fault I can find with this unit is the volume control. I’d probably rather have it in 1db increments as it takes a forever turn of the knob/push of the remote to change from quite to loud.

Charles I haven’t noticed this lag, but I don’t change the volume very often.
What kind of delay are you talking about ?
If I do change the volume I mostly use my phone rather than the remote.
I will try when listening tonight and let you know how it goes.

I ordered a 4.4mm balanced cable from Oidio sounds https://oidiosound.co.uk/ and I have been very happy with the ability to customise the cable and the answers to my questions in trying to make the perfect cable for me.

Charles been listening and cannot hear and delay with the volume. Seems pretty instant in testing for the last half an hour

Mine is a bit slow to climb up / down through the volume. Notice it most when going from talk radio (low quality streams) to music from Tidal or NAS & visa versa. The required dB swing between those can be quite large.
