Matrix Mini-I Pro 3 : Roon ready or not?

Anyone tried the balanced 4.4mm cable?
I think I need to order but I want to run them balanced
Very excited

I am curious to hear what people think about USB vs Roon Ready as I think I prefer USB. Just seems a bit clearer/better separation and bass and I am only using a little Sonore Sonicorbitor SE (which is Roon Certified) to play through.
I was hoping going straight into the Mini the sound would be the same or maybe a little better. Makes me think a better usb streamer might be the way to go although that kind of defeats the purpose of the all-in-one Mini.

An interesting observation. I plan to run mine on Ethernet and I was hoping for a slight improvement in sound from current Pi feeding either from USB or Coaxial from a Hat. Only because you are cutting out additional points in the chain. But if needed I can leave the Pi there.

Mike

Yes, correct.

Yeah, I’ll be interested to see reactions to this… I love the all-in-one nature but it’s a cost-benefit analysis, right? If the streaming part of this isn’t up to snuff, I’d rather do a RaspPi + HAT into a non-streaming DAC.

I would say that there is no difference in sound what so ever between the inputs. The Roon ready feature is great because it allows for an one box solution.

Yes I was going to buy the iFi Neo iDSD, but the lure of the all in one got me (along with excellent reviews).

Hopefully in a couple of weeks I will be able to say if it was a good idea, though I am fairly confident that it will be.

Mike

Work flawless, fantastic implementation.

Now we need DAC reviews vs the dacs you were using previously

Dale I agree, It would be good to get a number of people to feedback from those testing, both USB and Ethernet (and WiFI if using the pro)

Mike

Now I am happy.
My Mini-i3 Pro runs perfect with roon. The sound seems to be much better than before via iPad Air 2.
I use quboq as streaming service for roon. Does anyone know, how to get “MQA” showing in the display of the Mini-I when streaming as a roon endpoint?

Set MQA capabilities to MQA decoder and renderer, turn off Roons MQA core decoder, if you don’t need any of Roons DSP. If you need to use DSP, then turn of Roons MQA cor decoder and set MQA Device capabilities to Renderer only.

I didn’t think that Qobuz really had much MQA, only a limited number of album’s.
Said without any real knowledge though as I am a Tidal subscriber.

This is great. Just what I’ve been waiting for. I ordered the Matrix Mini-i Pro 3 last December as an all-in-one solution for a secondary bedroom headphone-based system, understanding Roon Readiness was pending. Had the opportunity to play with it for a while over Airplay paired with Focal Clears. To be honest, I found it only passable, particularly when compared with my other headphone setup, MyTek Brooklyn Bridge and HiFiman Arya. It just seemed a bit coarse and veiled, but OK. I was more than curious to see if the firmware update would make a difference. Once I found this thread, I began the update with Roon running in the background. The update only took a couple of minutes, and I could see the status change on the Roon Settings page to “certified” which was encouraging. Immediately transferred whatever was playing, and put on the Clears. The difference was not subtle. Big, big change, and just what I was hoping for. A different presentation than the MyTek/Arya combination, to be sure, but the grain was gone, and the soundstage opened tremendously. Couldn’t be happier. The only I’ve been waiting to try is the balanced output, and cables are shipping now…

Thanks for your perspective, it’s really helpful.
Mine is on order and my balanced cable already arrived, and been using it with my Zen DAC.

Thanks for sharing. Hopefully, others will chime in

After tracking the Roon Ready progress with interest since October I could not hold back anymore and have just made a purchase of the Pro 3. I read that Matrix may be bumping their prices due to raw material supply issues. Global shipping prices are a bit crazy at the moment too. Now it has Roon certification I figured it best to grab it whilst its there. Local dealer has it in stock but store is closed due to lockdown. Hope to have it middle of next week if he puts it in the mail on Monday.

Looking forward to see how it stacks up against the Element M. Have been super happy with that unit in my main HiFi rig. The Matrix gear is of very high quality. Will be using the Pro 3 as a dedicated one-box Roon headphone rig in the interim but it may ultimately end up in the kitchen-diner running a pair of active speakers.
Time will tell…

Great news, I moved my order up as well and it was ordered yesterday morning. Have to wait for stock to come in and be delivered.
But I look forward to giving an update in time to how well it works and sounds.
