I’m new to Roon and so far I like it very much. However when trying to setup ASIO driver in Roon for my McIntosh C47 preamp (with built-in DAC) I have an issue on every file I try to play (regardless of filetype, location, or Tidal).
Roon immediately stops with error “Transport: Roon lost control of audio device”.
I’ve seen similar issues being reported, but did not find any solution.
WASAPI works ok, but DSD256 is not possible as I can’t use native mode. C47 does support DSD256, but in WASAPI I get a report that DSD256 is not supported when in exclusive mode.
My setup: Roon 1.3 (build 259 64bit) running on Windows 10 64bit laptop (DELL XPS-15) connected to Mc C47 using USB cable (AudioQuest Carbon). Mc C47 has firmware 1.0 and I got the latest Mc USB drivers installed on the laptop. The Mc ASIO setup is using default settings.
Interestingly I have no such issue using Jriver MC 23 on the same laptop with the ASIO driver and I can play DSD256 in bitstream.
Does anyone know how this can be resolved to use the ASIO mode with C47?
Roon and DSD256 used to work with my C47 all be it with large almost speaker damaging pops on transport start and stop. McIntosh wouldn’t address the problem so I bought a different DAC.
Not sure why you are having issues. What firmware is your C47?
My C47 has firmware 1.00. I got it from my dealer only last week, so I was assuming the firmware would be up to date.
Is there a higher version of the firmware?
Ok, thanks. I’ll contact my dealer to update the firmware.
But it’s still rather strange that Roon has issues with the ASIO mode, while Jriver has none. It seems the Jriver developers have approached it differently then Roon and somehow managed to make it work even with my 1.00 firmware of C47.
Interesting, just reconnected my laptop back afer a day and suddenly ASIO works.
Except that I’m getting lots of hissing sounds randomly on DSD tracks.
I got the sample tracks from 2L.No.
Did the same test with Jriver and never faced a single issue on DSD tracks.
With Roon the hissing sound appears on majority of DSD tracks, but some play ok regardless which version (DSD64/128/256).
Sometimes skipping a track and returning back resolves the hissing sound and the track starts to play normally.
Hi @StefanK ---- Thank you for the report and sharing your feedback with us. My sincere apologies for the slow response.
Moving forward, I wanted to touch base to see how things have been holding up since your last post stating that the ASIO drive has suddenly started working again. Furthermore, in regard to this “hissing sound” you are experiencing when working with DSD content, can you confirm for me that your volume is at 100% during playback.
I’ve done a new fresh test after complete Windows10 reinstall, but I experience the same issue with hissing sound. I confirm the volume on my laptop is set to 100% when Roon is running.
This time however I was not able to make the DSD256 work. DSD64 and DSD128 worked better, but still very sporadically.
Hi @StefanK ---- Thank you for the follow up and the insight. Both are appreciated!
Moving forward, my apologies as I should have been clearer in my previous post. When I was referencing the volume level being at 100%, I was meaning in app Please confirm.
Hi @StefanK ------ Thank you for touching base and verifying that for me, very appreciated!
Moving forward, can you confirm what your “DSD Playback Strategy” is set to? “Hissing sound with barely audible music beneath the hissing”, often means you are playing a DoP stream to a device that doesn’t understand DoP.
I confirm, the ‘DSD Playback Strategy’ is set to ‘Native’.
In DoP mode I got no issue playing DSD, but of course I can only go up to DSD128.
For DSD256 I would have to use Native mode.
Hi @StefanK ---- Thank you for the follow up, and confirming your DSD settings as requested. Both are appreciated!
Moving forward, I can see what we can do in regards to getting the C47 to test with in house, but I am also curious if updating the firmware on the unit, as suggested in DrTone’s previous post would help trigger a change in performance. Have you had you your dealer update the C47 to the latest firmware yet?
