Hey @Edwin_Sell,

Thanks for writing in and for sharing your report!

We were able to review a fresh diagnostic report from your Roon Server and saw what the logs reveal about your missing Mendelssohn files and the broader situation:

Root Cause: audio_stream_format_not_supported (UnsupportedFormat)

The logs show a clear, recurring pattern, Roon is silently skipping certain .m4a files during the initial scan because it can't extract the audio format. These files get logged as SkippedFile with Reason=audio_stream_format_not_supported. This is almost certainly why Symphonies 2 & 3 aren't appearing.

The files that fail this way appear to be Apple Lossless (ALAC) .m4a files encoded in a way Roon doesn’t currently support — possibly DRM-protected files from iTunes purchases, or files with an unusual codec variant.

Notably, the same files appear skipped across multiple folders (Music2, Music3, Music4, iTunes, iTunes2), suggesting they were copied between folders but the underlying format issue followed them.

Some next troubleshooting steps for you to try:

1. Check Roon’s Skipped Files list (confirms the diagnosis) In Roon: go to Settings → Library → Skipped Files. You should see the Mendelssohn Symphonies 2 & 3 files listed there with the reason. This will tell you exactly which files are affected.

2. Identify the actual codec of the problem files On Windows, right-click one of the missing Mendelssohn .m4a files → Properties → Details tab, and look at the audio codec. If it says Apple Lossless (ALAC) or shows DRM/FairPlay protection, that’s the issue. Alternatively, open the file in VLC → Tools → Codec Information.

3a. If the files are DRM-protected (iTunes FairPlay) DRM-protected .m4a files cannot be imported by Roon. You’d need to re-purchase the album as a DRM-free download (e.g., from HDtracks, Qobuz, or re-download from Apple Music if you have a subscription that allows it) or re-rip from a CD.

3b. If the files are DRM-free but ALAC with an unusual encoding Try converting them to FLAC using fre:ac or dBpoweramp. FLAC is universally supported by Roon and lossless. Then add the converted files to your Music4 folder.

Then, force a rescan after fixing files. In Roon: Settings → Storage → click the three-dot menu next to Music4 → Force Rescan. This will re-evaluate any previously skipped files.

We’ll be monitoring for your reply and results. Thank you! :folded_hands:

Thanks for the reply. Bizarre is all I can say. Symphonies 2 & 3 are from the same set as Symphonies 1, 4 & 5 and they loaded just fine. Why 2 & 3? I did look for skipped files, but didn’t see any but I will look again. This is the first time I have had an issue with missing files. Edwin Sell

I don’t see any evidence that these are skipped files. The latest i see in that file location is 1/4/26 which ir far earlier or later (the case may be). These are not listed by any means. Suddenly I’m not able to add items from CDs. Weird is all I can say.,

Symphonies 1, 4 & 5 are in folder Music and are FLAC files. Symphonies 2 & 3 are also in the same folder and are FLAC files as well. No indication that these files were skipped either.

Both sets of symphonies are also in Music4, but listed as M4A files. But not listed in storage that way. I’ve done a rescan on both Music and Music4 to no avail.

I added CDs via my laptop and they added to Roon just fine. I re-scanned one of the CDs in question and it picked up just fine. Not sure what the issue was earlier, but everything looks OK now. For some reason it would not add the files earlier, but now it does. Strange is all I can say, but so far so good.
