Modem and router setup question #10001

Hi all,

I’m sorry in advance for asking, I’m sure this has been covered ad nauseam, but I’m having trouble searching for the answer. I’ll try to keep this brief!

I had success having my core connected to wireless in my system, but decided to get an iMac as a new core and connect it to Ethernet. Here’s how it’s setup at the moment:

The modem is Spectrum fiber. The core and the dac (Ropiee) connected directly to modem. Google Mesh router connects to modem for wifi.

This all works and I can connect my iphone and remote control Roon. But, I now don’t see the other wifi enabled endpoints in my system, and the iphone also doesn’t show up as an endpoint to play through either, which is weird.

Am I going about this wrong? Do I have to connect my core and dac directly to the router? I think this would fix it and I’d see the wifi endpoints, but I would need a gigabit switch since the Google Mesh only has one ethernet out port.

edit: I should mention that wifi is disabled in the modem, but I need to check IP addresses when I get home later.

Thanks!

Hi @Duncan_Duncan

I’m just a fellow Roon user.

If I read your post correctly, your Core is connected to you internet service providers box and your endoints are connected to your Google Mesh WiFI network.

You are likely to run in to troubles with this as you ISP box will dish out an IP address range (DHCP) such as:
192.168.0.XXX

Your Google Mesh WiFI network will dish out its own IP address range, likely to be (is for me):
192.168.86.XXX

This means things are on different subnets and will cause a few problems.

If you can, I’d pop your ISP box into modem mode if possible. Connect it to your primary Google Mesh unit which will be the only thing dishing out IP addresses (DHCP). On the primary unit, connect a small unmanaged switch, say an 8 port one. Connect all your equipment to this. Connect wireless endpoints to your WiFi.

Everything will be on the same subnet as above (mine is):
192.168.86.XXX

For better connectivity, if you can wire ethernet between your other Google Mesh nodes to the switch you’ll get a better WiFi experience as the backhaul traffic is via ethernet and not WiFi, freeing up WiFi bandwidth.

If any of this is unclear, just let me know. Others may chip in with additional advice.

Thanks, Menzies! Great advice. That’s what I’ll do. I’ll get the switch.

Hi @Duncan_Duncan

Just wondering how things are going with you. Did you manage to acquire a switch and are things no working for you?

Thanks for asking, I ordered a switch!
