The subject of MQA is an attempt from Meridian Audio to control/monopolize the music industry. If they succeed, the entire world will be paying royalties to Meridian Audio to license their “inferior” coding, as, without it, the music will be worse.
Sony and Philips succeeded for a period of time when they controlled the CD. Many other companies tried and still wish to do so, including Sony.
The high-end music industry issue is the thin financial opportunity exiting unless someone redefined it and control it. It is an industry that scammers control as we speak, where cable companies make more money than speaker companies …
The world is moving from music to content. Service providers want to be the youtube of the music industry. The future will be way different as new business models might show up and change entirely how audio content is produced and consumed. Large companies like Apple and Google see this industry as secondary or a part of something bigger.
So where non-MQA streaming is unavailable, users who do not want to follow a proprietary path are then economically disadvantaged. If one were to purchase files/media according to the flexibility that streaming (and Roon’s suggestions) allow, that would be a spend in the hundreds of dollars per month. Not really an equitable solution.
Since when has life and Hi Fi been equitable?
You pays your money you take your choice, Hi Fi has always been expensive and it has never been cheaper than it can be today.
Missing the point again. I’m not poor; it’s an issue of principle.
Tidal has become increasingly deficient, leaving me with no Roon-integrated streaming options. It is a slippery slope when the experience becomes deleterious halfway through a subscription.
I’m hoping Qobuz launches in Oz so I can keep Roon as it is a great bit of software.
Master Quality Authenticated (MQA) is an audio codec using lossy compression[1] and a form of file fingerprinting, intended for high fidelity digital audio internet streaming and file download.[2] Launched in 2014 by Meridian Audio, it is now owned and licensed by MQA Ltd, which was founded by Bob Stuart, co-founder of Meridian Audio.
The confusion lies with the fact that MQA was developed by Bob Stuart who was a co-founder of Meridian very many years ago.
Bob Stuart resigned from Meridian in 2017, and MQA is now owned and licensed by MQA Ltd which was founded by Bob Stuart.
Meridian (as far as I am aware) nowadays does not have any ties with MQA Ltd other than that they were originally founded by the same person and that Meridian chooses to continue to provide MQA capability in their DAC range.
Is MQA LTD a public or private company? if Private than who is the majority shareholder in it?
Meridian Audio has the interest to disconnect from MQA no doubt but I guess Mr. Bob Stuart is a majority owner in both. Please show me data if you have.
