Describe the issue

Multiple Roon Issues – Unable to Localize Root Cause

I am currently experiencing a mixed set of issues with Roon that have only surfaced recently, and I have not been able to identify the root cause. The issues sound quite similar to those described in ref#UBAJOM.
Interestingly, on some days - typically later at night - everything works perfectly fine. However, most of the time I now end up being unable to play any music at all.
I typically stream music via Qobuz, as well as live radio and local files.

Observed Issues:
- Search does not work at all
(Error message: “Can’t connect to Roon search…”)
- Playback from Qobuz sometimes stops with the message that the source is loading too slowly
(Streaming directly via the Qobuz app works without any connectivity issues)
- Qobuz recommendations and browsing content do not load at all however, Qobuz albums already in my library may play if I can access them
- Live radio stations do not load
- Album art is missing for my local files

Troubleshooting performed so far:
- Updated and restarted (power cycled) all devices (Nucleus, router, iOS remotes, Windows remotes, endpoints)
- Changed DNS settings on the router from dynamic to fixed (Cloudflare)
- Cleaned library and reinstalled the database
- Checked network connectivity (pings all tests fine)

Any help or advice on how to further troubleshoot or resolve this issue would be greatly appreciated

Describe your network setup

My HW Setup:
- TP-Link router (wired connections to endpoints)
- Roon Nucleus B server (wired to router via Ethernet)
- Endpoints connected to same router via Ethernet
- I run heavy DSP load on the server (but this has never been an issue before)

Hey @Captain_Cunningham,

Thanks for the report. Please share the exact local time and date when the issues next occur, and we’ll enable diagnostics and look for clues. If you haven’t yet, please also create a Backup and try an Operating System Reinstall from the Web UI in case this is operating system related.

Will try suggested steps.thank you.

If that doesn’t help @Captain_Cunningham, it would also be helpful for our team to review a set of Roon Server logs from your Nucleus.

Can you please use the directions found here and send over a set of Roon Server logs to our File Uploader? Once logs have been uploaded, please let us know so that we can check the server for your files, thanks!

Hi Noris,
thanks for your advise of re-installing the operating system. It worked well and looking good so far (at least yesterday). I’ll further monitor and report in case this was not successful (enough).
BR Guenter

Hi @Captain_Cunningham,

Glad to hear the operating system reinstall helped, and it sounds like things are looking good so far. Please keep an eye on it a little longer, and let us know if it does not hold up after further testing. We’ll go ahead and mark this thread for closure, but if you still see issues, please uncheck the solution box and let us know or submit a new thread. Hopefully, all remains stable moving forward, though. Enjoy your music!

Describe the issue

Issues with server connectivity resurfaced after days of working well [see Multiple Roon Issues Affecting Playback and Connectivity (ref#5VJDGB)];
I restartet Soon SW server several times, reinstalled opertating system, physically rebooted the Nucleus and reset databas incl. import of backup.
Now nothing works and I cant login on server again. I'm sent in circles between (welcome back) account login and login on roon app. Same on Win, iOS.
Currently, I'm not sure if it is a simple account issue, or if my server now is not working correct.

Describe your network setup

- Zxexel WLAN box connected to the internet
- TP-Link router connected to WLAN box (wired connections to endpoints)
- Roon Nucleus B server (wired to router via Ethernet)
- Endpoints connected to same router via Ethernet

Merged with original thread and marked as unsolved.

Hi mjw, I just uploaded corresponding log files.
thx Guenter

Hello @Captain_Cunningham,

Thank you for uploading the logs - we will take a look.

Regarding the login loop: when you click the login link and your browser redirects back to Roon, do you see a pop-up dialog asking “Open Roon?”? If so, you need to click “Open Roon” to complete the login. If you do not see this dialog, your browser may be blocking it - check for a blocked pop-up notification in the address bar and allow redirects from account.roon.app.

Let us know what you see and we will go from there.

Hello Vadim,

Thank you for taking this up.
On iOS, when I open up my roon app, I go for my local NUCLEUS (1).
Then it takes me to the login window, which opens up perfectly well (2).
Then I’m routed to go.roonlabs.com (3)
Then I’m prompted to enter my credentials (4)
Then I’m back at square 1 - I can’t escape that loop.

I guess it’s worth mentioning, that my NUCLEUS server worked well in terms of login and running CORE up to that moment when I reinstalled the database and ran my restored backup. (I experienced regular connectivity issues for search, local radio, and Qobuz)

BTW: my temporary local Win11 roon server on my laptop (which is not the way I want to operate) works well in terms of login and roon core. I can’t login from any of my other iOS devices though, which makes it only a work around to play any music at all.

Please advise, how I can - I don’t know - factory reset my NUCLEUS - or even starting a fresh database if this is the only way to proceed. As I said, the same not-running database on my NUCELUS workd perfectly well on my PC.

Thx
Guenter

Any update on your end?
Since it’s seems to be not an issue with my account please provide a solution how to reset the NUCLEUS, in case this grid-lock loop can’t be solved.
Any help is highly appreciated
Thx
Guenter

Hi @Captain_Cunningham,

Thank you for the screenshots - this makes it clear what’s happening. The in-app browser (WebView) used by Roon on iOS is blocking the pop-up redirect that completes the login.

Please try the following:

  1. When you reach the login page, copy the URL from the address bar
  2. Open Safari and paste the URL there
  3. Complete the login in Safari

This bypasses the WebView restrictions and should also avoid any potential issues with reCAPTCHA. Let us know if that gets you through!

Thank Vadim for your support, but no, this doesn’t work either.

Here is the sequence of the drama unfoldingm when trying to entery my NUCLEUS:
I switched to Chrome browser to avoid any iOS issues - same story
I’ve been sent in cirles again: Changed roon password; used both, PW authentification as well as signing in via my apple account. - same story - no success, no entry to the CORE server.

When doing the same excercise on my local WinServer it works.

So - I assume my Nucleus is misconfigured. (Both CORE installations are based on the same backup though). What could be wrong with the Linux box???
How do I restart and factory reset this box - or what steps would you recommend?

Hi @Captain_Cunningham,

From your account admin, it looks like your Nucleus running Roon Server hasn’t been in touch with our upstream servers in ~10 or so days.

Could you please get a direct ethernet connection from your Nucleus to your primary router? From there, we should be able to request a fresh server diagnostic report to analyze further.

Let us know when you’re able to do the above, thank you! :folded_hands:

hi Benjamin,
Thank you very much for this advice. This observation on your upstream server indicates something strange, which I had never expected - but it really seems to be the problem.

I did connect the Nucleus direclty to the primary router again and - it works perfectly well.
I dont’t have to understand why the setup that worked well for years stopped working well, but the degradation of network connectivity over time might be a hint, that something deteriorated. As I said, I have no idea, how a network setting might change overt time without interaction, but I’m curious to learn. (So when the core has internet access and reports it’s status ready, it still might have no network connection ?)

For the time being please consider the case closed.
