In the last few weeks I’ve started having multiple Chromecast “Shared Controls” notifications when casting to my Chromecast Audio device. I haven’t figured out what triggers this. Sometimes it’s over a dozen notifications. See the screenshot below from my LG G7 running Android 9.
How many Chromecast Audio devices do you have, is it just one and this keeps multiplying? What does your network setup look like, do you have multiple routers/access points? Perhaps the Chromecast Audio is switching between the multiple access points?
The problem only occurs using my Chromecast Audio device (“CCA”) and has started recently without changes to my wifi setup.
I haven’t seen this issue with apps other than Roon but I don’t often stream audio directly from TIDAL, Qobuz or the Chrome browser. The multiplying “Shared Controls” notifications are all for the CCA named “System” on my network, as shown on the screenshot above.
I also have a Chromecast with Google TV (“CCWGTV”) and a JBL Link with Chromecast. I haven’t seen the issue with these devices. The CCWGTV is located very close to the CCA and should be connecting to the same wifi extender.
Perhaps access point switching is the issue. My wifi extender provides the strongest signal to the CCA. In theory it shouldn’t be switching between the router’s weaker 5GHz connection and the extender. I’d expect some kind of music interruption if that were the case, but perhaps buffering fills in if there’s switching.
Often I queue up tracks from my computer, then use my phone to make changes from the listening position. Perhaps that has something to do with the issue, but it really shouldn’t since the whole point of “Shared Controls” is that they’re shared. I’m pretty sure the problem happens even without firing up Roon from my phone, but I’ll pay more attention to details to confirm that.
At any rate, this is more of an annoyance than a substantial problem. I just wanted to see if others have the issue or if there’s a simple explanation or fix.
Thanks for the additional information here @Kman_CT !
Range extenders have caused similar issues in the past with Roon, particularly since range extenders often do not implement multicast properly.
I would check to see if your router has a “smart connect” feature and try to disable this, this prevents switching between access points based on range/signal.
What kind of range extender / router setup do you have? What are the model/manufacturer details for them?
