Description of Issue

Hi.

I have used Roon for some years on my Mac core.

Everything is ok except when I play music with 192kHz/ 24 bit. Then I get some chopped music when I play this music on my Linn equipment from Roon.

I don’t get this chopped music when I play this from Linn’s own app.

Would a new Mac Mini for core solve this problem?

What can be the reason for these problems?

Are you using wifi or wired Ethernet?

I am using WiFi

Then that’s most likely the problem. 192/24 needs rather high bandwidth, as far as audio goes, and Roon’s RAAT protocol streams decoded PCM samples rather than compressed FLAC files like most others, so the bandwidth needs are higher. It also has small buffers to ensure synced multiroom, so it’s more sensitive to wifi speed fluctuations. Hence it is more demanding than other protocols and 192/24 in your case seems to push it over the edge

Thank you for your answer. So even if the speed upload is 150 Mbps you think this is the answer. So it would not help to install the core on another new mac equipment as Mac mini for instant?

The internet has nothing to do with this, the most likely issue is the wifi speed between your core and the endpoints. A Mac mini is typically also fast enough.

Wifi can fluctuate a lot. It may help to get as many devices as you can off the wifi and wired, and definitely your Roon core. Or, if you haven’t already, install a good mesh wifi.

You can test / rule out the wifi by temporarily running Ethernet cables if in any way possible

What do you mean by “mesh wifi”?

The link I posted explains a bit and names some brands. It’s a distributed Wi-Fi system that typically uses different transmission bands for connection back to the router (the „backhaul“) to distribute load and can cover a larger area.

A web search will find lots of information

If anything below 192/24 works, you can also stick to lower resolutions. It’s very questionable if 192/24 has any real benefits over, say, 24/96

Make sure you have maximum buffer checked for you DAC.

HI. Where can I find this layout??

Go to > Setting then > Audio then Click on Gear icon of your DAC, and click on Device Setup then finally click on Show Advanced.

I have done that, but I only get this image

When you “Show advanced”, the screen should then be a scrollable window - scroll it upwards to reveal more of the advanced settings…

I am sorry but that is impossible on my unit?

Are you sure? You’re on a Mac (I use Windows) - is it not possible to click and drag with your mouse to move the window?

Yes that is correct

Buffer size and some other settings under the advanced tab seem device dependent.
I have buffer size on one DAC but not another using the same Roon Remote.

But there should be more settings in advanced anyway (unless they are all not there for the Akurate, which seems unlikely) and it should be possible to scroll down.

@Arnt_Berg_Rognli There is never a visible scrollbar in this window but did you try a two-finger scroll on the trackpad for instance?

I have tried several times, but there is no such option for my Linn Akurate.

On my system I sometimes have to click on Show advanced twice before it allows me to scroll down to those options. I think it’s a Roon bug.
