Description of Issue

This is irritating. Most of my music is organised into basic genres that I have defined myself and in most cases these are at the top level. I have a genre of Christmas music but it is not so easy to find; I first have to select Others, then Holiday before I can finally select Christmas. I have failed in my attempts to bring Christmas up to the highest level. Is there a way? Why does it have to be so deep down in this structure?

I must say I find working on Genre Mappings in Roon a nightmare. To make an edit it is necessary to scroll down the longest list of genres and sub-genres, no option to hide the sub-genres and no scroll-bar provided. It needs attention.

Using the Filter may be helpful…

I’ve found that selecting Genres from the drop down menu and selecting Holiday from there brings up all the Christmas albums in my library. I can then select play from there for all albums or pick and choose from the list of albums in my library.

EDIT: Not actually working for Christmas

If you go to My Stuff > Genres > your genre, then click the (…) button on the genre, the edit options for the genre will open. Go to the genre list and there should be a clickable option „Make top level genre“

Very similar to my experience - ALL my Christmas music is tagged “Christmas” in the “Genre” field, but they all show up in Roon as “Holiday” though I’ve specifically mapped “Christmas” = “Christmas” in the Roon genre editor.

Why can’t we just tell Roon to IGNORE it’s own “Roon knows best” suggestions and follow the genres clearly and unambiguously tagged properly in the files?

“Christmas” is a genre that receives special treatment in Roon (auto hiding its content out of season) IIRC. This is IMO the likely reason why users can’t make changes to this specific genre. So if you like the special treatment, stick with “Christmas” and its immutability or else, go on and create your very own “My Christmas” (or something like that) to break out of Roon’s predefined special handling.

PS: The nesting into the “Holiday” genre may also be “hardwired” as a top category for “Christmas” and other similar genres (other countries / religions may have other / additional holidays worth the same treatment as “Christmas”)?

Right. That’s what I get for making recommendations on weird genres on the phone while at work. Edited above

Well thanks particularly to Suedkiez I now have Christmas at the top level.

Here comes the follow up question: I don’t really like the picture, can I change it?

Unfortunately no, it chooses pictures based on what’s in your library and some weighting of artists and popularity of albums they appear on. Often the result is pretty nice, sometimes comical, and occasionally bordering on offensive. (A popular artist appearing on a very popular album that is tagged with a particular genre can make this artist the representative one for a genre even if they are really not, but there is nothing you can do).
