My Qnap NAS quit. Best new setup?

My qnap TVS 741 NAS just died.

Am I better off getting a new QNAP model ($1,300) that I can put my old drives into or should I get an intel NUC. Dont have a lot of albums downloaded and find myself streaming from Qobuz more these days. Any suggestions on a setup would be greatly appreciated.

A NUC is a good route for Roon but what other files were on the NAS ?

I run a desktop PC with 2 x 8 Tb HDD synced with a 10i7 NUC with a 4Tb SSD, the best of both worlds. I have always used desktops (with multiple HDD) rather than laptops so I never considered a NAS.

Have you been running QuTS hero on the NAS? If not, but standard QTS, and your library is not super huge, you might want to consider a cheaper consumer-grade QNAP with a less powerful CPU. My experience with migrating HDD from one QNAP model to the other is pretty positive, if you don“t plan to change the OS.

If that is not applicable, you have to ask yourself which NAS features you really need, and what else you plan to do with the NAS.
