Description of Issue

My mac mini server crashed and i had to reinstall system and start again. My music is on an external HD. I was backing up Both my Mac Mini HD and My music HD. My Roon server shows on the network and I can play music at various end points. I have lost my “Favorites” and my playlists. I have to believe that they are backed up somewhere in my time machine backups. Can anyone tell me where this data is stored and do you have any tips on how to restore this data?

Also,

I had Roon ARC working before the crash. Now when I click on settings in Roon and then on arc I get this screen telling me to start trouble shooting. However when I go to my iPhone ARC is working. Do I need to fix this?

First of all, backing up the Roon database directly with Time Machine is not recommended because it will take backups while Roon updates its database, simply because TM has no idea when this happens. Therefore, it is likely to create inconsistent backup states that Roon may not be able to load.

You should back Roon with its built-in backup tool. Then you can back up this backup with TM. See the instructions here:

I suppose you did not do this? If you didn’t, and all you have is a straight TM backup, then you can only hope and pray that this works. The Roon database of the installed Roon app is here, and this is where you will find the TM backup:

/Users/Your_Mac_Username/Library/Roon

It works while the iPhone is on the cellular network?

I didn’t think about that. I does play on the wifi connection. On cell data i get a poor connection message. Im not sure if the the signal is just weak or if it is not connecting, I have only just started using ARC and when I am in the yard I use wifi. My cell data is Verizon and I only have two bars at home.

Data was working on the road previously.

The error on the Roon ARC settings page only pertains to the Core being reachable and ARC working from the cellular network. ARC always works on the home wifi where the Core is.

I would try resetting the ARC app from its settings, or uninstall/reinstall it. Maybe that helps.

The Roon ARC settings page is quite strange because it says it is not working but the diagnostics data box is empty. Normally there should be an error message there if it is not working. The “Roon Core IP” is also empty and it should show the IP address of your Core. Did you try clicking “Reset” on that page?

And when it worked previously, did you have to do any setup work or did it work automatically?

Good news for me. I was able to retrieve the user library files. Everything is working my favorites and my playlists. Arc also says that it is working. Thanks for the help and I will change the way I back up as per the community suggestions.

Thanks so much

Phew! Enjoy and good luck!

OK, Just came back from dinner. Roon had some message asking me to log in. I keep trying to log in and I keep getting a message Network Error: Please check your network connection. My network is fine but I cant log in to Roon. My computer with my Roon core is up and running normally. When I try to log into Roon it lets me select my Roon core but it won’t connect. Any ideas?

I have also tried connecting with other devices all with the same result.

I’d check the log file.

<your_userfolder>/Library/RoonServer/Logs/RoonServer_log.txt

I changed the network id of the core from fixed manual to dchp fixed and it seems to have fixed the problem.
