All fine, if you’re happy with the sound!
Measurements of both units imply a strong preference for (hopefully) euphonic distortions, rather than a transparent chain - I wonder what those speakers are…
Perhaps if you share with the community the details of your system , we could explain why it is no good and needs to be revised.
Whom are you responding to?
Congrats on beating “the next upgrade” FOMO audiophile syndrome.
Totally. Love it that you’ve put together such a good system to your ears! Time to rest, enjoy your work, and maybe post some fun pics over here https://www.reddit.com/r/drunkhifi/
B&W Sig Diamonds. I know lots of discussion will be round the corner on this one. Not into the valve vs ss debate. All i know is no matter how good a ss amp is theres always something that could be a little better. A nice ladder dac or a 1/2"master tape player/ vinyl into levinson 33’s will resolve that to a large extent - who knows what doing on with that da topology, give it a clean supply and skip the preamp is for sure a good start.
Spent 30 years measuring stuff and always being more bothered with the gear, Just appreciate that i am enjoying and listening to so much music now.
What is your opinion about the book Neurotribes from Steve Silberman?
I’ve not read it yet, but prompted by your question, I’m now into the second chapter of the Kindle version.
So far, I think the author is on the right track and it should be an enlightening and worthwhile read.
I’m convinced that the roots of neurodiversity lie in genetics. A staggering proportion of the adults I’ve met with ADHD/autism were diagnosed as adults after the traits were identified in their children.
I’m looking forward to reading the rest of the book.
Great share. Thanks
My ten-year-old has just been diagnosed as being on the spectrum.
Perhaps there’s some level of neurodivergence in audiophilia?
After all, anyone who obsesses about the directionality of a copper cable must be on the spectrum, right?
I’m pretty sure the “tech” types don’t worry about the directionality of cables, as the notion is scientifically unfounded…
Nomatter what you do, Diana Krall will always sound bloody awfull, gosh do I hate that kind of music.
You spend too much time at hifi dealers
Very good comment. Some recordings sound the same whatever you play it on, like Dire Straights or some “man with acoustic guitar”. Boring!
Some very dense multitrack popular hit recordings from the 70-80’s only sound good on an analytic but neutral sounding system. Would be funny’s to play Boney M, Michael Jackson or so on a high end show and give people insight in those kind of hit recordings where there is much more going on in terms of dubbing and hidden instruments than you ever thought there was.
I wonder about this sometimes. Supposedly Bruce Swedien did 80% of his mixing on Auratones - very basic single driver speakers supposed to sound like AM radio. So for example this would include Thriller!
Mixing engineers generally try to make sure that their mixes sound good on what they think most people will listen on.
Of course they do also use good studio monitors when mixing and mastering but…
For my market (Jazz) I just check things still work OK on Auratones - but most decisions I make on PMCs (and electrostats at home).
But a lot of more mainstream music is probably optimized for lesser gear,
No engineer in this world mixes on Auratones, that’s not the purpose of these speakers.
Yes, oh so true. Most so called “high end” system totally fail to get the most out of recordings. But marketing and the so called “audiophiles” who do nothing more than repeat marketing terms start blaming the recording while in reality it is the playback system that is flawed. Whenever someone makes a statement like “my system is so good it makes bad recording sound even worse” you’ll know for sure it is a flawed system that only makes certain kind of recordings sound good.
Bruce Swedien said he did:
"I love Auratones! You know what Quincy calls them? The Truth Speakers. There’s no hype with an Auratone, and it’s sad that you can’t buy them any more. I knew the guy who made them out in San Diego, but he died a couple of years ago. If you see any Auratones on eBay, buy them! I have about three or four sets of them. Probably 80 percent of the mix is done on the Auratones, and then I’ll have a final listen or two on the big speakers

Interesting, he probably was such a good engineer that he could focus on how it sounds in a car or supermarket. But still needed 20% of the time to hear it on the main speakers. Otherwise the vinyl Masterer would have to take all the excessive lows and highs (compensating for Autatones freq. response) out. And how could he otherwise convince Michael to do 10 more background dubs if they would be inaudible, or put some more cowbells just for fun?
But nevertheless it is not a bad thing to have studio speakers at home. I listen to Yamaha NS1000. I also find most high-end stuf not good. The lack of analytic sound is marketed with “emotional, musical” blabla. More and more high-end speakers don’t have a mid driver. The poor 7” has to take care of bass as well, so on such speaker you won’t be able to separate all the little Michaels and creepy sounds in the background on Thriller.
