I totally agree. The better my system gets, the better bad recordings sound. Such weird sounding albums like Chaz Jankel’s Chazablanca sound likable now on good studio speakers. It’s like: ok I get the point, and only then the sonic signature gets out of the way to make space for the music. That is what I call ‘musical’, not the sonic signature some high-end goeroe puts into the speakers.
Thanks for the link Richard.
I think most engineers use them to check their mixes will sound good on lesser gear, and adjust if they don’t. But not as their primary monitors.
I think Bruce was unusual.
I recall someone saying that spending so much time listening to such great music on such poor speakers when the better monitors were a button press away must have been torture! But obviously worked for him.
I sure they were not using the Auratones when they were tracking!
It’s even worse than that. A 7” woofer with 1” dometweeter basreflex system is probably one of the worst combinations you can get. Directivity is all over the place, bass is mainly distortion, mids are overdamped because else it won’t produce any bass at all and all the measures that have been taken to even make it into something that remotely resembles a fullrange system leads to big compromises elswhere. I have not heard a good sounding 7”-1” combo in my entire life, they sound like a good loudspeaker at best but I have never heard one replicating real live instruments so in my opinion it’s definatly NOT highend
Listen to- and discover music !!
Hello my brother,
It is the curse of Audiophile. Always looking for improvement.
My advise is simple, enjoy your system.
From my standpoint, I’ve the basic right.
Amp = Gryphon Diablo 300
Speakers = Monitor audio PL 300 Mk 2
Cable= transparent iteration - meaning chose as per your budget.
Turntable = Luxman PLD 151 with a great phone stage
Digital source = Auralic Aries/Vega and the JURY IS OUT meaning this is the only possible upgrade.
Lets not forget Puritan Power condition - Fantastic product - you have nothing to lose.
Regards
Ayo
You can drive yourself nuts system matching to the millionth degree .
I’m getting too old for that.
Happiness doesn’t consist in having, but in being.
Being an audiophile makes you happy then…? Haha, just joking. I agree with your truism.
Pursuit of perfection is a game of diminishing returns. For example, i have a pair of B&W 801 D4s and also a pair of Formation Duos. Hard (at least for me) to tell the difference sometimes despite the 10x price difference. Just enjoy the music.
Also your “perfect sound” can change over time to something completely different from what you liked.
I think people including myself sometimes attempt to box themselves in a certain sound and self soothe to not need to try other things. We all go through phases of curiosity levels going up and down.
When I start feeling like I want to change my system or components I go and re-read all the reviews that led me to purchase them in the first place. Works for me. Happy listening.
Cause you are an anal retentive audiophile.
I’m still solvent.
At 76 years old, I don’t think I could hear any possible improvement in my system. I would like a better listening chair sometime. I’m averaging 10 hours per day listening when in town. Probably about the same away from home.
It’s all about enjoying the music & the moment
