Networked Endpoint Issue: Losing Control of Sonos Endpoint

Another Sonos losing control disappointed costumer
As an lifetime subscriber and with perfect control for more than a year I can’t use Roon without the roundabout of Airplay
Roon told us they will solve the problem but this didn’t happen

Tried to set max bits to 16 but didn’t worked

Can anyone connect roon to Sonos directly without the airplay trick?

Hi Gabriel there are several tips that can help.
Remember Sonos creates its own Mesh network and that can cause issues.

I stream to multiple Sonos zones (mostly linked stereo pairs and almost never get any drop outs or pauses) and I also never use AirPlay
Most of my Sonos are set to 16/44 as described elsewhere.

I also have only one Sonos device (a Boost) plugged into Ethernet and everything else (Sonos wise) runs over WiFi. I have mentioned this in some other threads as it took me a long time to come up with a reliable streaming process for Roon.
It has worked for me and a number of others so it is worth giving it a try. It takes a while to reset the Sonos routing after doing this, but once it works it should hopefully be optimised for your network.

Hi @Gabriel_Weber,

We’ve moved your post into a dedicated thread, as we’ll require more system information to support you directly.

To be clear, the issue affecting FLAC file playback that Sonos introduced inadvertently in Roon with their 15.2 firmware update back in March has been resolved for several months.

If you’re experiencing persistent dropouts with Sonos, it’s most likely related to Roon’s interaction with your network and/or the mesh-network configuration of SonosNET mentioned above by other helpful users. When SonosNET is active (by having at least one SonosNET-capable device hardwired to the ethernet), Sonos will effectively build an independent mesh network using your existing network topology and other WiFi-connected Sonos speakers. In certain setups, this can cause reflections, interference, or reveal otherwise recoverable WiFi dead spots within a wireless configuration. Sample dropouts accumulate, and Roon simply cannot maintain the stream.

The first step will be to gather a more complete understanding of a) what Sonos devices you have active and b) how they are connected to the network.

Secondly, we’ll need to ask to activate diagnostics for your RoonServer, so we can capture logs when there’s a dropout event.

Finally, it will be especially helpful if you can provide a timestamp or the name of a track that is playing when you next experience a dropout.

Thank you!

Not at you Michael…Same here 4 Sonos play:3’s one pair and 2 stand alone all WiFi and never had any issues. If I did the wife would be down on me like a ton of bricks as she likes to play to them daily.

Hey Wizard please share your setup to try and help other users (though maybe you did and it is that simple).
It seems that different users setups are all over the place depending on use of Mesh network and Sonos model’s.

I have already stated that I only have one device (Boost) plugged into Ethernet but that was after an update to Roon 1.8 and a Sonos update broke a previously perfectly working system.

It turned out Sonos was creating a Mesh within my Orbi Mesh and routing traffic through a couple of Play 3s that were stereo paired and plugged into an AP and causing chaos.

That was my second and last network rebuild to make Roon/Sonos happy.

Nothing special…set the Sonos to use my WiFi and that’s was about it they appear as Sonos in audio devices. Done

Hi @Gabriel_Weber

Just a fellow Roon and Sonos user here.

A few have experienced this in the last week or so.

Are you able to advise what Roon is running on. I suspect a Windows machine, so would recommend looking at the firewall exceptions as a first step.

Ensure RoonServer.exe, Roon.exe, and RoonAppliance.exe are added as exceptions.

A combination of a Windows/Roon update may have affected this.

Also might be worth checking your Sonos app for an update which usually brings a hardware update to.

So yours is not making use of Mesh WiFi in that case, which is sometimes better depending on the Sonos models.

For newer Sonos households that would be my recommended route as they can make use of 5 gig WiFi whereas older models Only have much slower 2.4 and some Mesh network’s limit access to it

no mesh in my place - 5 AP’s all wired backhauled - all unifi setup with switches and routers.
