New M4 iPad Pro used as a Roon Remote

My 11” (M4) model is very smooth in Roon, with only an occasional hint of choppiness. Surprised what an improvement it is compared to my old iPad Air 3.

My 12.9 Pro M2 isn’t scrolling great either. Not super bad (the 15 Pro Max is worse) and I don’t scroll around wildly, so I’m not bothered much, but it’s not appropriate either.

Seems to be a different issue than the one with the better iPhones:

Sounds like a bit of a mixed bag then! What do all the new iPad owners think of the fancy new display?
Thanks
Doug

Scrolling is nice and smooth for me on 13inch M4.

Screen is nice though the app needs a real black mode (roon does not) to fully see it. My 12.9 M1 ipad screen was plenty good enough.

My favourite aspect of the new ipad is how thin it is. This allows it to be light enough to be used more comfortably with the magic keyboard.

For me the M4 11 inch iPad Pro is stunningly fast compared to my M1 iPad Pro. Things that take seconds on the M1 are instant on the M4. But seeing the posts here makes me wonder if the issue is not the M1 vs M4 but something on my M1 that is a problem.

I may erase / restore my M1 to see if it I still notice a huge performance increase.

Appreciate all the feedback…for Adam, when ur referring to performance improvements of ur M4 over ur M1 you are seeing those in Roon specifically and not just in general (though I suspect u see improvements there too)…

I certainly appreciate the comments on the no “true black mode”…would think that would be something the roon team could implement relatively easily…but what do I know! Could they not have their app adjust/take advantage of the OLED vs mini-LED vs LCD displays in diff tablets/laptops.

Scrolling seems to still be a problem/variable that the Roon team has been trying to resolve for iOS for ages…maybe again this new silicon will help find a solution or the upcoming iPadOS 18 will help?

Thanks
Doug

Doug, sorry I wasn’t clear. My comments on performance were strictly with Roon. I noticed everything is slightly faster but really just slightly. But with Roon, it seems to be 5 to 8X faster than my M1. This makes me wonder if there’s not some issue with my M1 iPad rather than just the processor in the new one.

I’ve had almost all the iPads starting with waiting in line for the 1st 1. Since I’ve been using Roon, all of the iPads ran Roon with no problems, even my m1 iPad Pro 12.9.
The only reason to go to the m4 iPad is to hope the new iPad OS can take advantage of all that power, so far, all the iPad OS’s have failed to make any of the M cpu iPads real machines.

This happened on mine yesterday, I simply closed (not minimized) arc and when I reopened it arc it was already connected. Good luck

Same, I use a 5th Gen iPad Mini normally and it works just fine as either a remote or end-point w/ headphones. Roon works fine with the 10.5" iPad Pro and 12.9" (M1) Pro as well.

Wondered if anyone has tried the new M2 iPad Air with the 13 inch screen? I like the idea of a big screen for Roon browsing…I imagine it will be similar to the M2 pro?

I have the 11” M4 iPad Pro and Roon has been crashing sometimes when hitting the queue button.

Speaking of my experience only. I’ve had my iPad Pro 11 M4 for two weeks now and Roon has been great. Smooth as silk actually. I did have an issue with it not locating my NUC Rock at first but I force quit the app and it found it immediately after relaunch. I have no complaints. Scrolling is not jittery and using trackpad on Magic Keyboard is great. These new iPads are fast.

The difference I notice is the OLED display is much easier on the eyes….no backlight

Agree. I passed on the iPad Pro M1 and M2 because I didn’t like the display. The M4 display is their best in my opinion.

Hey Dave,
I was wondering if you’ve been able to solve your connection issue with Roon Remote. I’ve run into the exact same issue having my new Ipad Pro M4.
Roon Arc is able to connect. As per this thread i’ve turned off private wifi address.
If any further info is needed please let me know!

Doug - Using IPad Pro M4 13 inch as remote with no issues from the iPad Air I previously used. Graphics great and depend on WiFi speed ( I upgraded to 6e which Pro can handle) and Ethernet speed from your provider.

Just wanted to say an update rolled out and seemed to have fixed my issues.

I’m trying to decide if I should go with the 120hz iPad Pro, or if the regular iPad is just fine. On my iPhone 15 Pro the Roon Remote app works okay, but the scrolling is choppy (not smooth), despite the 120hz. Is the Roon iPad app better than the iPhone app? Is the scrolling smooth on the iPad Pro?

I have the Pro M2 and the scrolling isn’t 100% perfect but better than on the 120 Hz iPhone 15 Pro Max. Can’t compare to other non-120 iPad
