New M4 iPad Pro used as a Roon Remote

Hi everyone!
Does anybody see any issues using this new iPad as a Roon remote?

My second generation iPad Pro could do with replacing and this new iPad looks pretty awesome with its fancy OLED screen and fast M4 processor as a great way to enjoy the Roon experience (all those album graphics popping on that display and hopefully buttery scrolling throw my library c that processor) as my primary remote.

I just haven’t used any of the Apple Silicon based products.

Thanks
Doug

As a remote, it would be exactly the same as it is right now. The differences you mention regarding the OLED screen would be the only real change you would notice, from a viewing perspective.

My IPAD 12.9 Pro is the 2019 version, pre M chip. It works well as the Roon remote interface for the home entertainment system. Thought about an upgrade when I started using the Audyssey App on the IPAD. The internal processing seems a little slow between stages then there is the communications back and forth with the AVR. Think i waited long enough as this new M4 version should speed things up considerably.

Don’t waste money on a new iPad for non native apps…
I just changed from a 12.9" 2020 (4th gen) to an 2022 M2 12.9", and was very much underwhelmed with the performance improvements. Don’t get me wrong, Apple Silicon is very effective and powerful, but the apps are still running on bicycle tires…

I’ve ordered the 13inch pro and I’m looking forward to it.

Hopefully a black mode will one day be a thing in roon.

Erm, does the iPad not have the Dark/Light theme setting in :gear:> Settings > Setup?

Yes but dark isn’t black in the sense that OLED likes

No doubt scrolling will be choppy as hell. Same as on the iphone 15pro

It’s much better on the iPad Pro 12.9 M2, compared to the iPhones. Not perfect but not choppy as hell, either.

You know exactly what I meant. Black and dark are not the same thing.

Real blacks/contrast and battery savings.

I think OP was looking for one reason to buy new iPad.
I did a couple of months ago (M2; 120 hz refresh) but a Roon remote would be well down my list of reasons (or excuses!)

FWIW still a little choppy. I think it’s the software, as the hardware is overkill.
Geekbench results have the iPad considerably faster than this laptop (something like double the speed).
Geekbench results don’t tell the whole story.

If you can afford an iPad Pro (I assume you comfortably could; just sayin’) yes they are a nice device. But if you’re wanting a list of plausible reasons for a new computer, probably better to stick to buying a PC!

Thanks everyone for your comments! Would love to hear from those who are getting new ones once they have arrived from apple to see if they are indeed a step up from non-Apple Silicon iPads (like my 2017 version) and/or a noticeable improvement over the M1 or M2 iPads…particularly in image quality within the Roon remote app and scrolling/responsiveness between links/artists, responsiveness to ur Roon Server, etc. I certainly appreciate the comments about the fact that even if the hardware is significantly improved, which it clearly is that the app currently released by Roon may not be able to take advantage of those qualities such as the OLED screen and M4 processor! Granted, I will use it for other things as well, but I have no interest or desire to buy a Mac laptop, Mac mini, etc. I already have other products that currently do not need replaced. It is the fact that this particular iPad is now seven years old and seems to have a little bit of issue with the screen instantly as well as poor battery life at this point, but still tolerable and certainly works well for purpose. More than somewhat ridiculously high prices Apple has for this particular product, especially if you go with the one gigabyte memoryboption to get the 10 core M4 processor with 16GB RAM vs sticking with 256 GB memory and the 9 core M4 with only 8 GB RAM…at that point ur are indeed in laptop territory but again i dont want/use my iPad as such and much appreciate the form factor as a tablet (esp given its lightness/thinness). Thanks

On Wednesday I will have the 13inch M4 base model and will be able to share my opinion. I currently have the 12.9 inch M1 model.

I got mine yesterday and haven’t been able to get it to find the Roon Server. The “Choose your Roon Server” dialog spins without timing out. I’ve deleted the Roon Remote app and reinstalled it. I’ve double-checked LAN settings and my router. Still not working.

Macbook Pro and another older iPad are both connecting to the Roon server without issue.

Any ideas? Thanks.

Hi @Dave_Heiber,

In the iPad’s Settings, scroll down till you get to “Roon”, then select it and check that “Local Network” access has been granted.

Thanks Carl, it has been set to access and still fails. Oddly, Roon ARC works well.

Hi again @Dave_Heiber,
Thanks for checking / confirming that, and you’ve already said the iPad is on the right LAN.
It may be the Roon app doesn’t play well on the new M4 iPad Pro, so I recommend creating a support request in Support.

Have you turned off “Private Wi-fi address” in the wifi settings?

Bummer! I was waiting for all your new M4 reports from the field!! I had a similar issue pop up a few weeks ago and it seemed to do with having my server on production mode and remote app on early access. I deleted all the remote apps from all devices, rebooted server several times, turned back on early access on my server (sonictransporter), redownloaded the remote apps from Test Flight and voila my ipad could connect as a remote again. So if on early access come off and if on production consider going to early access…none of the other “help tips/articles” worked for me…IMO Roon has some issue going on as I have had it happen now twice in 8 wks and seeing reports on the community forum ALOT lately since about 3 updates ago with apple remotes not seeing the roon server.
Thanks
Doug

Got mine today (iPad pro m4 13), scrolling is better than my iPhone 14 Pro (that is a complete mess) but this absurdly expensive iPad is still choppy when running Roon.

I honestly do not understand how this issue doesn’t bug the hell out of everyone on iOS. It is extremely annoying.
